Enjoyed his lecture when I visited Univ
Ira Berlin is top scholar in the field. Enjoyed his lecture when I visited Univ. of Maryland, Hard to get true numbers of slaves from Africa, but many scholars estimate 6 to 10 million to the United States but at least twice those numbers when Cuba and Latin America is included over 160 years. Attrition rate in slave ships middle passage was significant also.

Excellent Historical Coverage of the African-American Experience in NYC
I used this book in my history class and it covered in great detail the experience of African-Americans from their arrival in NY under Dutch control to the end of the 19th Century. I encourage anyone who is interested in learning more about NYC's rich history to pick this up!

How Many Elementary and High School Students in New York are Taught about This
This book should be in every school in New York City as well as upstate New York one particular interesting chapter "Securing Freedom: The Challenges of Black Life In Civil War New York" beginning on page 289 points out the viciousness of the mobs in good old New York City, this is on the bottom of page 291 On Wednesday July 15, (1863) mobs looted and burned black residences and, in separate incidents, lynched two black men, James Costello and Abraham Franklin, the twenty-three year old Franklin was yanked out of bed, beaten and kicked through the street, and hanged from a lamppost on the corner of West twenty-eighth Street and Seventh Avenue". On page 293 there is a picture of a black man being hanged. I should hope that after reading this you would want to buy this book and read it for yourself.
