Malcolm X (The Criterion Collection) [4K UHD]

A great movie
Not the brightest of times in US history (or African-American history for that matter). Like him or not, Malcolm was a great character in the historical sense and he deserves this panorama crafted by Spike Lee. A lot of effort went into recreating the atmosphere of the times. The set decorators and wardrobe people deserve just as much credit. Ernest Dickerson, the cinematographer who collaborated with Spike on several projects must also be mentioned.

SPIKE LEE'S MAGNUM OPUS + CRITERION'S WORK ETHIC MAKE THIS ONE OF THE BEST 4K RELEASES OF 2022
Speechless. That's the word I'll use to describe everything about Criterion's new 4K release of Spike Lee's Malcolm X. The transfer just looks stupid (in the BEST ways possible) giving this 90s-made film a timeless cinematic feel that almost outshines the rest of Lee's work. And its about as visually splendid as Lionsgate's Reservoir Dogs. If you're already familiar with and have admiration for the Spike Lee joint than picking this up is a no-brainer. An intimate recapturing of one of America's most polarizing civil rights luminaries anchored by a career best performance by Denzel Washington runs at almost 3.5 hrs, which for me FLEW by. THAT'S how absorbed i was rewatching. The packaging is also worthy of all the praise as well complete with a gang of special features that dwarfs all home releases and sits among some of the best in Criterion's 1000+ entry catalog. Excellent Christmas present to myself as I'm sure it would be for the cinefile in your life.

An American classic
More than 30 years later, and this film still holds up in quality and its profound message. As massive as the movie is, the box set is awesome as well.

A fabulous 4K presentation.
This film looks glorious in 4K. I read a little personal criticism of some changes to a more prominent blue in the prison section, but I don't really think it's much about anything. I still have the old bluray anyway. Overall, grain and bitrate/encoding are stellar. This comes on a BD100, and for my tastes is a beautiful representation of the film. Never have we seen it with so much fine detail. The HDR grade in Dolby Vision was also fitting, providing depth and great contrast to all the colors. This does come in a digipack, but if it is damaged return it. These days Criterion is pumping out as many damaged sleeves in plastic cases as they are digipacks. It's all seemingly random.I for one love the look of this packaging. I think it is the best anybody has done for the film. This digibook is a nearly perfect encapsulation of Spike Lee's film. You can't wrong with this one folks. A must own for film fans.

Fantastic film, but the damage either by the provider or shipper is not good…
The media could not be loaded. Needless to say this is a fantastic film, and I was very excited to get my hands on the Criterion 4K version. But after a fairly lengthy shipping process, I’m disappointed by how it was received. There’s a fair amount of damage to the box and inside the plastic wrap there are also scapes and scuffs.Somehow the 4K disc also already had fairly significant scratching on it. I’ll be loading it up soon to see if it works without issue.

Denzel at his best!
There is nothing close to human emotions so intensely depicted that this movie brings out.Hailed as one of the best films to ever come out, the 4K quality does further justice to it.This is a film about mankind, the struggles, the deception and sacrifice for a greater cause.
