It's hard to hide secerts forever.
Great story within a story, excellent character development throughout and the tieing the two miseries together was masterful. I enjoy Rosenfelts injection of humor throughout smiling at his wit, and love his interaction with Tara (we are Golden owners also). I enjoyed the court room drama with excellent crosses by Andy, look forward to book two in series.

Interesting turn of events
First off I don’t pay a high price for ebooks but the storyline intrigued me. Sometimes his humor was funny and sometimes annoying. However I was engaged in the book and finished in one evening. It was so good I ordered the second. Hope it is as good as the first which had some twists and turns.

Good book with lots of angles
I bought this book mainly because there was a dog featured. I guess the saying, "You can't tell a book by its cover." Holds true in this case. I was a bit disappointed that Tara played such a small role but liked the story anyway. I bought one of David's other books which I will read in due time. Overall, a good story.

great mystery
This was a light-hearted, well written mystery. Not a lot of gory details, just a fun, skilled attorney with unorthodox ways of winning his cases! Definitely worth the read

I love Andy Carpenter stories!
The book was fine, in good condition, but the narrative a little disappointing as it didn't quite live up to what I'd grown to love with David Rosenfelt's style. Still this was the first in his Andy series so I needed to read it since already halfway through the whole series. Better to read this one first before getting into the rest.

Great Writing, Story and Character Development!
Amazon.com Vine Voice reviewer Michael A. Newman recommended "Open and Shut" by David Rosenfelt as one that author David Hosp could have learned character development from before writing a book that I thoroughly enjoyed, "Among Thieves." Accordingly, I could not resist reading a book Mike enjoyed more. Surprisingly, I found David Rosenfelt's novel "Open and Shut" even more enjoyable than "Among Thieves!"Rosenfelt's murder mystery kept me enthralled on the edge of my seat flipping pages without the slightest idea of time or what was going on around me. I found myself pausing only to laugh out loud at the author's amazing sense of humor intertwined with the story.Open and Shut refers to the case of Willie Miller, a 28 year old African American and alcoholic is on Death Row convicted of murdering a young woman, Denise McGregor (a reporter for local newspaper the Newark Star-Ledger ) in an alley behind a Teaneck, New Jersey bar where Willie worked. Seven years later when it was discovered that one of the Jurors openly lied to conceal the fact that her brother was a cop who was killed in the line of duty, that "technicality" results in grounds for a retrial with such overwhelming evidence that the new trial would be short and the verdict the same.Andy Carpenter, a 31 year old lawyer is encouraged by his father to take the case to defend Willie Miller in the new trial.Nelson Carpenter, a retired former State District Attorney who originally prosecuted Willie Miller dies of a heart attack just three years after Andy's mother dies. An only child, Andy is shocked to learn that he inherited 22, million 432 dollars from his father. He learns that the source of the money grew from 2 million that was deposited from an unknown source 35 years ago on June 17, 1965.Looking through his father's pictures he sees one dated June 14, 1965 of his father with 3 other young men, one of which was young Victor Markham whose son Edward and the murder victim were a couple. Another was Frank Brownfield a real estate developer who has built malls in metro New York. The last was Mike Anthony, the editor of a small newspaper in Essex County who committed suicide 6 or 7 years ago.Andy's estranged wife, Nicole left him and his golden retriever, Tara six months ago. Her father, U.S. Senator Philip Gant was Nelson's best friend.Andy's girlfriend is ex-cop and now private investigator, Laurie Collins. Together they climb an uphill battle to get to the bottom of who killed Denise McGregor. As they develop their defense and look into the men associated with the 1965 picture, Andy becomes a target from unknown assailants."Open and Shut" is one of the most exciting and enjoyable murder mystery novels I have ever read. I can hardly wait to read "First Degree," the author's next Andy Carpenter murder mystery introduced in its excerpt at the end of this novel. Thanks Michael A. Newman your recommendation was on the money!
