Spoiler-FreeReview of the Blu-Ray/Digital Copy
This review is mostly about the Blu-Ray/Digital copy and less about the movie itself.First with the bad. The script is just flat out bad. First, the idea of going NATO instead of U.S.A. pretty much KILLS the whole purpose of the original G.I. Joe concept. Seems as if Hollywood is afraid to be "pro-America". But hey, dramatic license so that is forgivable I guess. But because it seemed so different from the original, I decided not to see it in the theater - great decision. The acting is atrocious, just woefully bad - Tatum is often flat-out deadpan. Surprisingly, Wayans was the "best" actor in the movie but since he's a goofball and part of his role was being a goofball, that's not saying much. He and Duke (Channging Tatum) were supposed to be elite special forces guys but that was very poorly developed and nearly unbelievable. The script had some brilliant elements in sparce places, but they are too few, and too unconnected and underdeveloped - overall it was very poorly executed (almost appeared "rushed") and could use a "do-over". The action scenes are way over-edited and choppy so you never really feel like you are watching one fluid event. Plus, the "facial hair" of Duke and Rip-cord when in dress uniform is but one of many annoying little "nits" and plot holes throughout. I could go on and on. The best part of the movie is the ending (no spoilers) which set up (finally) the "Rise of Cobra" and the rise of Destro. Those who enjoyed the old show will probably find that part to be the most appealing. Because of the ending, even after all that badness, I'm awaiting the sequel...Now, despite all that is bad about this movie, I still give the Blu-Ray/DC 4 Stars and I encourage those with home theaters of any and all levels of quality, especially those with families trying to entertain on a budget, to purchase this movie at this price. First and foremost, as others have said, it's pretty entertaining despite the numerous flaws. Lots of cool gadgets and action. Just lower your expectations and you will be fine. And for $19.99 (+free shipping/no tax), you get: 1) the blu-ray (an awesome looking transfer, by the way, presented in 1080p/2.40:1 - totally enough digital "eye candy" if you don't mind CG); 2) DTS (5.1 DTS HD-Master Audio to be precise)surround which sounds great and will sound great in any home theater (this from an armchair audiophile); 3) Digital copy (for your iTunes/Apple TV or whatever you use. This is a BIGGIE. You get a studio quality copy of the movie, piracy free, to enjoy legally on your portable device.) I generally support all blu-ray releases that offer this option without over-charging. With all the bad, I could easily see watching this again from my iphone on a trip so I appreciate the DC; 4) A special features DVD with The Making of G.I. Joe and background on the visual effects and design of the movie. I'm not one to always watch special features but I feel the studios owe them to us when we pay to "own" their movies, and since this set of features had me curious so I watched it - not bad; 5) MOST IMPORTANT - 2 hours of family entertainment for $20 from the comforts of your own home, and in the home theater you worked so hard for. Even if just two people watch at $10/head, you've already beaten the "at the movies" cost. Add in the DC and you're way ahead. In this economy, I'll take it.

Enjoy it for what it is: a dumb action flick
This movie is undeniably poorly written, the acting is sub par, and plenty of it makes no sense. It's even a bit sexist at parts, not pervasively but definitely noticeable. Still, it satisfies that action flick itch in a Transformers movie kind of way. There is a glimmer of a clever plot hidden in there that it's a shame they never really used that well, as it is brilliant, but the sequel is pretty bad. Still, if you want to zone out to some mindless action, there are certainly worse flicks to choose.

G.I. Joe - La nascita dei Cobra
Film pieno di azione anche se non scorre proprio fluido, video ottimo ed audio DTS eccellente con basse frequenze non invasive e effetti su ogni canale ben delineati. Nel complesso ottimo.

This is what a comic book translated to the big screen looks like!
I love crazy action movies. Strangely, however, that generally does not extend to James Bond movies, in which I tend to think that both the action and the characters are simultaneously too silly and not silly enough. Their particular stylistic balance just doesn't work for me. My idea of a good James Bond movie would be movies like Mission: Impossible 2 (2000), True Lies (1994) and even xXx (2002): fun and stylism to spare, cool hi-tech and super-slick production values, and a neat touch of sci-fi. If we had Bond movies as good as that, then the over-the-top, superbly produced, far-out action-filled, mega-effectively entertaining and comical G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra would be the greatest Bond-movie yet made. We're in the near future. A weapons manufacturer named McCullen is plotting world domination, and only the secret, super-hi-tech elite team G.I. Joe can save the day. McCullen, however, has his own elite team which is pitted against the Joes, and towards the end of the movie it's all-out war! McCullen's evil cohorts - Zartan and the Commander - are not easily controlled and may just be controlling McCullen for their own purposes...In short order the well-focused plot explodes with nanite bombs and a nigh-infinite supply of hi-tech gadgets and craft, both for undersea, land and air travel. It's paradise for a sci-fi fan!The story, too, is explosively packed with charismatic characters, their interrelationships and their background stories. It seems many audiences find this too much to take in, feeling confused and overwhelmed by the non-stop onslaught of cool details and plot entanglements - in this regard I relate this movie to movies like Spider-Man 3 and Iron Man 2, where a lot of people also seemed to complain that there was too much stuff crammed into the stories, but personally I like it this way. I want coherent complexity that doesn't insult my intelligence, and this is what these movies give me.G.I. Joe is a great movie. It's got super-science spilling out of every pixel, campy characters straight out of a superhero comic book, great actors (Christopher Eccleston! Jonathan Pryce!) playing preposterous villains, and a substantial and character-driven story that looks very good super-imposed on the tongue-in-cheek James Bond-like plot! It's so self-consciously done that it's hilarious. And intentional hilarity signifies highly competent workmanship! In G.I. Joe this competence also extend to the rest of the production values, esp. the special effects which are superb. The end result is so much like a comic book come to life that it cannot but please any appreciator of superhero and sci-fi comics. To sum up, if you are interested in hi-tech action and sci-fi, then this is one of the greatest sci-fi/action movies ever made, and almost certainly the greatest in 2009. It knows what entertainment value is, and it shows it! This is goddamn great stuff. It's a pity so many people have dismissed this movie as awful without actually seeing it. That little fact only makes me rate it even higher, as this is probably going down in history as an overlooked and underrated gem. Freakin' 5 stars out of 5, man!
