Fitzgerald returns again to his blindfolded allegorical figures in this second piece of his series titled "In The Shadows Of The Ruins". The paintings in this series pose questions about life, justice, truth, and what humans mean when we discuss "The Good" Artist statement regarding this work: In this second work in my continuing series, I have depicted a beautiful young woman, blindfolded, once again alluding to classical depictions of justice, but using the figure's blindness as a symbol of the moral and metaphysical confusion which we all experience upon finding ourselves, deeply longing and desiring truth and justice, but always left wanting in our essentially nihilistic and post-religious society. Mersault, the Protagonist in Albert Camus' masterpiece, The Stranger, said "I opened myself to the gentle indifference of the world." I think most of us have subconsciously accepted Mersault's statement as some type of irrefutable metaphysical truth, if Truth it can even be called (or if that's a word I dare utter, certainly not in polite society). In creating the works in this series, I am asking these types of questions, what is the good? How can we know it? Must we abandon the concept of Truth if we shed our religious history? I have chosen to reflect upon these quarries through this mysterious image of a fellow human, in this particular work, a contemporary woman, lost beyond a bay with the lights of a city glowing behind her until they gently fade into the surrounding darkness.
