High quality maps and descriptions of civil war battles
This is a great atlas for civil war buffs. Its shows the major battles, offers descriptions of how they build ups to the battles went and key participants and actions. This is a great atlas.

Step-by-step progress of a battle as side bars to the clear maps
I am reading Shelby Foote's 3 volume Narrative History of the Civil War and wanted an atlas to accompany it. I had another one that did not serve well and so ordered this from Amazon and it is the best companion ever, balancing in some ways Foote's not unbiased views. Together the two authors create a great reading experience.

An excellent overview.
I've read books on individual battles, but this book is an abridged synopsis of the war. The introduction describes the country's mind set in the years before the war. Then it offers a short two-page description of where, when and why of the various battles in chronological order complete with maps. An excellent book to use to see the big picture and put the other books in perspective.

Splendid atlas with excellent narrative.
It begins with the South's secession, Ft Sumter and provides narration/ prose to fill out the battles. Also thumbnail sketches of military generals. It is the perfect compliment to other books about the Civil War. The only complaint was that the dust jacket was torn at the top of the spine. But nothing to fight a war over.

Good Reading. Maps blurry on Kindle version
The written work is interesting until you get to a map or illustration. It is blurry and unreadable. I thought maybe it’s because I zoomed in. I tried leaving the illustration at normal size and used a magnifying glass. Same thing, out of focus. Now I wish I hadn’t purchased it.

A Good Overview
I bought tiws atlas to help me sort out references being made as I read various works on US Grant. It has been helpful but lacking in detail. For example, Grant's description of the Vicksburg Campaign lists many more locations than are covered in this atlas. I find it useful but I need to dig deeper to get the complete picture.

Lots for the Money
This is an inexpensive slim fairly small atlas (9 by 12 inches), but packs a wallop. Some of the criticisms are accurate, sometimes the maps are not easy to read, binding is such that at the centerfold things are cramped. I don't know about the inaccuracies mentioned, but any volume covering as massive amount of material is this is likely to have a few. Actually I have never had a map that was totally accurate on anything. But I wanted an atlas that I could use while I was reading the occasional Civil War book. And I did not want another massive atlas (I have several of these, but not a Civil War one). I doubt that a better book for the purpose is likely to come along. I recommend it.

Excellent. I needed a set of maps to accompany my audio version of Shelby Footes magnificant history of the American Civil War. This does the job perfectly and enables me to get a much better picture of the overall geagraphy of the Civil war together with the details of the individual battles.
