It offers a complete and self-contained Wi-Fi networking solution, allowing it to either host the application or to offload all Wi-Fi networking functions from another application processor. ESP8266 has powerful on-board processing and storage capabilities that allow it to be integrated with the sensors and other application specific devices through its GPIOs with minimal development up-front and minimal loading during runtime. Its high degree of on-chip integration allows for minimal external circuitry, and the entire solution, including front-end module, is designed to occupy minimal PCB area.

Spend the money on a better board, you will spend far more in frustration than you will save in money on this one.
These boards have given me nothing but grief. I've worked with other NodeMCU boards without issue. However, these have had a number of serious issues:- Not recognized by MacOS or Windows 10.- Both Mac and Windows drivers are faulty, each with different issues.- Mac drivers aren't particularly useful with most OS X versions.- Provided drivers on the LoLin website have led to serious USB issues (hard resets when plugging in USB) for myself and my students.- Driver uninstall process can be especially ugly on OSX.- Pin mappings don't match those of the typical NodeMCU.- Boards are larger than typical NodeMCU and don't fit on a bread board - it has to hang off the side.- USB connect/disconnect cycling on PC.- Bad USB cable with at least one of the 10 boards I purchased.
