Going into the third grilling season!!!
Update 5: The good folks just sent a replacement cooking grid and another of the charcoal grid and we are ready for the Spring Grilling season while in lockdown. The customer service has been fantastic and this grill continues to turn out AMAZING food with just a handful of charcoal. This season I got Kamodo Joe big block charcoal and it already seems to be a whole lot better than briquettes or the Lazari mesquite. Great to have this grill to add some variety to my cooking while we are awaiting release from lockdown Update #4: Fire Sense sent replacement grids! Wonderful folks. Update #3 STARTING TO FAIL The ceramic "grates" that hold the charcoal are starting to break up. It cooks very well, but the quality of the materials is not great. UPDATE #2 Still loving this little grill. Over the weekend I made a "riser" to get the grill a bit higher off the charcoal since if you cook fatty foods, the flare ups tend to singe things (or I could just LEARN something from the Japanese and stop cooking fatty food). So far there have been no issues with the plastic edging melting or with the vent doors. I do not expect this to be the longest lived grill I have ever had, but the results can be spectacular. Last night we did chunks of marinated chicken thigh on skewers which came off tasting better than most restaurant foods. Got a crispy char along with moist meat. I was sure to skin the meet to avoid flareups though. UPDATE! Loving this hibachi a lot after using it for a couple of months. It does a fantastic job with chicken, fish and lean meat. Because of the way the heat is insulated and funneled "up", the sear on food is excellent. No issues with durability, but we do put it away every evening after use. The thin metal vents are still holding up as is the plastic trim. The rack is losing its chrome finish to reveal a solid copper construction. Not stainless as advertised, but good enough. An added advantage is that the rack has a fence aruond it that keeps food from slipping off when using a spatula. Stil loving it. I bought this as an addition to our Lodge Cast Iron Sportsman Grill, and I am very happy with it after grilling, beef, chicken, pork and fish, this is a great little grill. And since I am one frugal SOB, I love it doubly for how little charcoal it requires to cook a meal for four people. In general about 16-20 briquets will cook all the meat (and even extrs) for a group of four folks. Our Sportsman grill literally takes 5x that much for the same result because while you lose a TON of heat through the cast iron of the Sportsman, the clay body of the Fire Sense is an insulator any the fuel is not wasted. The Fire Sense does indeed seem to focus the heat up for a fantastic sear on food and a wonderful smokey flavor. Yes, this is a very inexpensively made grill. The vents are thin metal that you have to be careful with, the "bumpers" areoun the upper rim are all cheap plastic and the grill surface is a little "light", Please note that on mine, the grill grate is all stainless and cleans up easily. Mine is NOT painted as others have noted. The body of the grill is unfired clay that was made in a mould and then the vents and bumbers were stapled (yes stapled) into the clay before it was fully dry. This means that if you leave it out in thhe weather, it WILL disintegrate. Don't while, just empty the ashes after each use and put it away carefully. I suspect that it is about as durable as a red clay flower pot. . Overall this grill makes great tasting food, really quickly with almost NO charcoal. PROS: - Fantastic heat for a great sear (you do need to watch it when you are first using it) - Cheap on charcoal. One Costco bag looks to last us most of the season - Wonderful smoky flavor to the good - Easy clean up of the cooking grid so far - Inexpensive overall (but should be cheaper du to the minimal manufacturing costs) - Light weight - Comes with a neat"handling rack" so you can move it, even when hot - FANTASTICALLY well packaged for shipping. (seriously, this is important. I HATE it when stuff arrives in the "store box" and is in pieces). CONS - Really inexpensive construction - Unfired clay body has about the same durability as a flowerpot - Feels like the vents will not last too long (so quit fooling with them) - Having the parts stapled into the clay is really odd Get one and grill.

So far, so good!
First off: it took forever to arrive. I ordered the skewers and the grill at the same time. The skewers arrived first while the grill arrived 3-4 weeks later. This was supposed to be a present; I ended up buying a replacement present. Shipping delays aside, this is a practical little grill that has been working quite well so far. The cooking capacity is good, specially if you have the right skewers for the job. Assembly was a breeze; it comes practically assembled already. That said, the packaging material (styrofoam) does stick to the grill, so make sure to thoroughly clean it before first use. On the looks side, I think it looks quite adorable and I quite like the peach/light pink color. That said, the paint/coating is a matte one, so it can be stained a bit too easily. We've managed to keep it stain free so far by immediately wiping down anything that lands on it (granted that the grill is not piping hot, of course). Regarding durability: will have to revisit the review for this, but so far, so good. I imagine that the big impact to durability is regarding the grill's integrity. So, don't drop it or crack it, and you should be fine.

The grate is better then what is pictured!
So I purchased this grill as a starter yakatori grill and a grill to use my wok with. I figured it's relatively inexpensive, looked to be built well and I liked that the entire unit was ceramic and not cheap stamped sheet metal. First the good stuff i've found so far: A lot of people complained that the grate is different then what is pictured and is very unstable, falls off and what not. Well they resolved the issue (with mine at least) and the grill has little tabs on the sides that press down on the sides of the grill so it's actually REALLY secure. The metal basket that the grill sits in is pretty cool too, it has a bucket like wire handle to carry it around with and it also sits the ceramic up off the surface you have the grill on. It also feels pretty sturdy. As for how the grill functions, it's very straight forward and simple, one baffle, a coal grate, and a small ash bin/plenum area. Possible issues: First thing I noticed that could be a potential issue is that the ceramic is an unfired slip style ceramic, kinda like those ceramic chiminea's you find at the home improvement stores. Now I have one of those too (which incidentally I also cook on :p)and the only issue I've ever had from that one is that there have been a couple nights where I had stuffed it with wood and had 10' flames shooting out the top of it which resulted in the chiminea cracking a bit. So concidering I won't ever be able to get 10' flames to shoot out the top of the yakatori I don't think it will be an issue. As for cooking with it I have yet to fire it up (tonight prob). People were complaining about how the cook surface is small, well it's a yakatori, it's meant for cooking little kabobs, single strips of meat and generally little asian stuff. No you probably won't be able to bbq 20 burgers for the neighbors and their savage little children that are busy destroying your yard on it but then again it's not meant for that. If thats what you want, spend another $40, buy yourself a weber, go to wal-mart buy the $15 tube-o-beef, slice off some patties and call it good. Only thing else I can think of is yes, if you drop it, it will break, so don't be dumb and handle it with care. I'll put up another review post cooking experiments. I'll be using mesquite lump coal as no one sells the crazy 1800 degree japanese stuff around here. I will be making kabobs, and attempting to stir fry with my wok on it too.

Great little table top grill...with all the complaints you read, remember it's a sub $50 grill...
First to address the many complaints about a scratch here and there, it's a cheap yakitori grill...it's made of clay. A scratch on the clay surface doesn't bother me. I didn't buy this expecting it to last a lifetime. If I can get one year full usage out of it, I think it's money's worth. I bought this to see if I wanted to invest in a $300-500 yakitori grill. I think this size is fitting for 4, depending on what you're cooking. We were doing 3 different types of Wagyu beef, scallops, large shrimp, AND asparagus. Too many options at once, therefore, the space was enuf for 4. But if you only have a few cuts, then you can probably get away with faster cooking for more. I read an idiotic review of someone who left it outdoor and got rained on, and he blamed the product. It will tell you on the box and in the instructions to not get it soaked in water. I was worrying about the heat, but the outside was not hot at all. I could put my hand on all the outside walls and bottom and it was just warm. You can pick this up while it's still lit and it won't burn you. As for the cooking surface, I do like how the edge has a ~1/2 - 3/4 lip where you can place finished items to keep warm. Bottom line is this, if you're looking for a cheap outdoor table top grill, I don't think there's a cheaper one on the market...Maybe, I just haven't seen it...Also, even if it was more expensive, i'd still say this is a great deal and works great...

Pair it with the Weber Cast Iron Sear Grate
This is an excellent grill for a single person who wants to grill single entrees in a limited space like an apt or condo. The drawback with most small grills such as the 14 inch Weber Smokey Joe or the Lodge Sportsman Hibachi is that they are still too large for one person and end up wasting a lot of charcoal. This is because it takes high heat and many briquets to reach the necessary heat level to sear a thick steak but once you reach that heat level, it doesn't take long to cook the steak. Then your remaining briquets and their heat is wasted as they continue to burn to ash unless you put the lid on and close the vents. Also with iron and metal, much of the heat is transferred to the grill housing. This is heat that is robbed from the cooking process. The small ceramic Yakatori is like a fuel efficient Japanese car. It sips charcoal but still gets hot since heat isn't being conducted to a metal surface other than the grate. All the heat goes to your food so you need less charcoal. This grill has a somewhat flimsy cooking grate so I recommend pairing it with the Weber Cast Iron Sear Grate whose 12" diameter is a perfect fit for the 11" diameter of this grill.(http://www.amazon.com/Weber-8834-Gourmet-System-Grate/dp/B0044ERTDY/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top) Then buy a few small spring clamps to act as retainer tabs such as those that come with the original grate to keep it from sliding around. It doesn't come with a lid but as someone else mentioned, go to the 99 Store and pick up a cheap stainless steel bowl of 11" diameter and with either a drill or epoxy glue, fasten a cheap wooden drawer knob on the top and drill a hole or two near the top to vent. You now have yourself a super efficient personal steak machine that will get high mileage out of every bag of briquets. FOLLOW UP: I have had this grill now for over a year and I still like it. I think a few follow up comments are in order. The grill comes with a clay disc perforated with numerous 3/4" holes that sits on a small ledge at the bottom of the grill. This is what the briquets sit on and through which air passes from the side vent. It is somewhat fragile. Once I was gently tipping the grill over on soft grass to pour out the ashes and the disc rolled out onto the grass and broke in half. No way such a gentle impact should have caused it to break. However, the customer service was excellent and the vendor promptly sent me a new disc at no charge. However, the two broken halves are still serviceable since they can be fitted together and placed in the bottom of the grill like before. HOWEVER, I noticed that my coals seemed to lose heat and not burn hot as soon as I poured them into the grill from my charcoal chimney. It was frustrating to pour in blazing charcoal and then for them to quickly lose heat so much that I couldn't even sear a steak. Things took forever to cook. It finally occurred to me that the clay disc is blocking a lot of air that otherwise would pass through the typical wire grate that most grills have. Even with the perforations, the clay disc is mostly opaque. The material to space ratio is probably 60-40 which blocks a lot of air. I had an epiphany and decided to use the wire trivet that came with my Rival model 3100 crockpot. This is the classic original crockpot. It came with a trivet to use in the bottom of the crockpot. The trivet fits almost perfectly where the clay disc sits. You just have to bend the three wire footings inward slightly. Let me tell you. IT MAKES A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE. Now the material to space ratio is around 5 to 95. Tiny pieces of hot charcoals can now fall down under the trivet and continue to work their magic while the larger hot coals blaze away above. It's like night and day. So if your Yakatori grill just doesn't seem hot enough, try to get this trivet. I found another one at a thrift store for 25cents recently or maybe you can order one from Rival in Kansas City. Or maybe Amazon carries it although it is an obscure part. It is an old crockpot and I don't know if the part is still available but you may be able to get one from Rival for a few dollars. If you go to enough thrift stores often enough, you WILL find one eventually for practically nothing. P.S. I mentioned in my original post that spring clamps were necessary to keep the Weber Sear grate from sliding around. This is false. The sear grate is heavy enough so that it sits on the grill without movement and no clamps are needed

The BEST little Konro grill...I'm going to buy another!
This grill is perfect for 2-4 people. Burgers, chicken, skewered foods, or 2-3 steaks at a time! Can also use this as a smoker if you use a 12" diameter stainless steel bowl, or clay pot; drill a hole on the top and buy a kitchen cabinet knob/handle that you can get at your hardware store . Personally, I purchased a Le Creuset 12-qt stockpot lid, here on Amazon, because I wanted to use the grill as a smoker--immediately, and didn't want to take the time to build one. It fits perfectly, and is used as a lid for some of my other pots, when needed. It did arrive with 3 x (1/4 inch) blemishes/dings in the clay-around the top where the metal folds over...but they don't interfere, and can't be seen when I put the rack on top. Contrary to other reviews, I think that the rack is solid enough for 3 (8-10 ounce) steaks. BTW: the rack is 11" in diameter, and the available cooking area is 8.5" in diameter. Total height is 8 inches. If you want a more substantial rack...try Lowe's or Home Depot. I found a porcelain coated 8" X 13" grill/rack for about $10 bucks that I may use, if needed. There is a 6" round clay "pod" to lift up and air the charcoal at the bottom. Mine arrived intact...but I purchased 6" diameter cooling racks from Ebay that will fit if the clay one breaks. Search for "6" Round Chrome Plated Metal Cooling/Roasting Rack". You'll get 2 racks for $11.88 with free shipping. The extra rack is used as a grill for my 8" square Hida Konro grill. For the price, I bought an extra set...just in case I actually need a small cooling rack or extra grill rack. Well made. I'm going to buy another from Amazon, because the price is $20-$30 cheaper than anywhere else, and may increase in price as summer approaches!? The second Yakitori grill will be used when I have parties larger than only four people. (Share the grilling!) Regarding the distributor: I've bought several products from Well Traveled Living, and I've only had one issue with broken/missing parts, and it was taken care of within a week. If this grill arrives with broken pieces, simply call the number on the back of the instructions and leave a message with your phone number. They called me back within 3 days and promptly sent out a replacement part....no questions asked, with FREE shipping...I just had to email them a copy of the Amazon invoice. Going directly to the distributor and mentioning "Amazon" seems to be quicker than using Amazon as the "middle-man".

We are putting this thing to USE
I got this for my husbands birthday, because our smaller one broke and I could see the light leave my husbands eyes when we had no way to sit outside, enjoy the weather with our son, eat fantastically cooked meats and vegetables. It was really saddening, our back porch hadn't been sat in over a year. But when I decided to get this one, the ultimate reason why was because it is bigger, way bigger than the other one we had. I have several pros and cons with this purchase, first off the size is perfect the metal around the corners is a definite plus. However my first complaint is that on the FIRST use, the metal grate used to grill the meat- bent... Second; the grate you use to place whatever it is your grilling is very... Unstable, meaning; It warped the first time we used it as well, so it had this sort of dent in it now. So possibly try to find you a better grate some how? I haven't really looked into this yet because my Husband really doesn't care, and he takes very good care of it trust me, cleans it before and after every use and makes sure to put the proper amount of coals inside. But all in all, seeing the light come back to my husbands face as he whined about how he wished I would have let him open his gift sooner (I got this 2 months in advance so it was just sitting in the front room every day staring at him wrapped up of course) haha. So it's probably the best gift I've gotten him so far. We use it every single day, breakfast, lunch and dinner. We have even started the carnivore diet just so we can cook more things on his new yakitori. In conclusion, for the price? It's a heck of a buy, and will buy again once my husband runs this one into the dirt <3 -xoxo Happy Shopping

Great BBQ, highly recommended
- original review written in 2016: This is a fantastic yakatori grill, I love it. This is not styrofoam painted with fireproof paint its cast diatom cement which is classic construction for a small yakatori grill like this. (Big would be restaurant size). This is a nice large size for a table top BBQ, Don't mistake this for a hibachi, yakatori is a different style of cooking and this is a different kind of grill. The body of of the BBQ is very thick and solid, it's designed for very hot burning binchotan or other hardwood charcoal and to hold in the heat. But I did knock off a star because the metal doors and trim is flimsy and just tacked on but even if they broke off or rusted out you would still have the functional core. It could last forever but I could imagine it would crack if you dropped it. ****** Update May 2022****** I did love this BBQ, I wanted to try to be authentic to yakatori BBQ by buying this BBQ and bichotan charcoal and it was delicious. But his BBQ has a serious flaw. It says this made out of clay but when you think of clay as mud that has been kiln fired. This is more like mud and fine wood particles or some such material. The reason I know this is because I accidentally left this BBQ out in the rain overnight and it fell apart, the water seeped in and it broke up and crumbled, it literally fell apart in my hands when I picked it up. I had used it for a couple of years and it is definitely heat proof but unfortunately its not fully waterproof. There are other yakatori grills made from more durable material like cast iron.
