A great ASL book with CD-rom
I have several other ASL dictionaries, and I really like this one.

Great reference for people who already have fundamental understanding of ASL
I took ASL for about 4 years but I am a little rusty. I bought this book to refresh my memory on words. This is the definitive reference dictionary for ASL. You can't get more authoritative than this. Just with the nature of an ASL dictionary in print form, this is a better reference for people who already have sign language fundamentals. It's easy for me to understand what the arrows and simulated movements mean, but it would be difficult to understand without any knowledge of ASL. There is probably a version with a DVD though. One thing to note is that there are regional differences so your region may use different signs for states, etc.

A little difficult to follow
I was very excited to get this book as I am familiar with Gallaudet University and felt like they would only put out exceptional material. While there are many signs in the book and the book itself is of excellent quality, I gave it 4 stars because I find the pictures and explanations of the sign language signs more difficult to follow than other sign language books I have. If I was not already familiar with many signs, I would not be able to use this book and be able to reproduce the signs they are trying to teach.

Beware hardback!
This review is on the book itself, not the Seller or their services:I don't know why I didn't realize this was a hardback copy...very heavy and can't carry it with me for that reason. HOWEVER,the included DVD is well worth the discomfort of the book's weight! While it is slightly older technology, just type in the word/sign you are looking for and it will jump right to it. The synonym list is also a great feature (this will stop the new ASL student from looking for signs that aren't listed because they are on the "main meaning list" already. I'm in my final year of interpreter training and this fits the bill for vocabulary checks. Plus, you can trust a Gallaudet publication for it's true ASL content.

It's good
For me as a profound deaf person later in life it's a good study tool . I would of liked the DVD that came with it to work on a simple DVD player as I do not have a computer for this .

too many motion lines per diagram...
I bought this to extend my vocabulary, for that it's good... But I bought a book years ago, (Elaine Costello) and each sign that has more than one movement has two diagrams, each with a part of the multiple motions that makes it easy to understand the sign... This dictionary often has one sign diagram with multiple arm and directional motion lines that makes some of the signs very unclear. Good thing there's a video online, tho that's not always convenient, or if you're fortunate enuf to have an older hardcover edition there's a disk included

Unoperating DVD for modern version PCs and no pictures, only signs drawings
Contrary to the book cover which shows pictures of people signing the vocabulary, inside, no pictures : only drawings and the dvd is too old to work on modern computers : really expensive for the content ! Very disappointing !!!
