this book was some of the best money I have spent online in a while
I first started reading the book a couple months ago and ever since, its become harder and harder to put it down. If you have worked in the fast pace field of EMS, then this book will find its way into your mind. It constantly kept reminding me of all the times i saw exactly what the author is seeing. Even if you were never involved in EMS, the book will still keep you engaged by pulling you in at almost every page turn. I say almost for the same reasons I gave the book 4/5 stars. There are a hand full of times you want a particular story to wrap up, but they are few and far in-between. Overall, this book was some of the best money I have spent online in a while. Thanks Canning, keep the books coming.

Even superman gets nervous
As someone who has always had an interest in Paramedicine, but does not as yet work in that field, I found this book to be quite an eye opener. Not so much in the way that Peter describes his experiences in the field, which he does extremely well, but the way in which he opens up about his personal feelings and at times self doubt about his abilities. It never occured to me that a paramedic would feel uneasy about seeing a broken bone. I think people just assume that they are oblivious to the sights that they encounter. The book itself is well written, and Peter's explanations on why they administer different drugs are concise, and give the reader a sense of understanding about why things are done. Does not try to glorify the profession by only telling the happy outcomes. Tells it like it is, that sometimes no matter what you do, you can't always save everyone.

Nasty
Both books were very well written. However, at times I felt that the author disrepected certain people, especially the obese woman on the floor. The fact that author confesses he choose to use a double dose of soap to clean his clothes is a slap in the face to the woman who is suffering, weather from her own will or not. There are many forms of self-hatred a person uses to abuse...drugs, alcohol, food to feel better. The junkie the author picked up every night is no better than the 500 pound woman, they are all in need of compassion. Heroin, whiskey, food...pick the poison but if you are in the profession of dealing with the demons, have some empathy.

Enjoyed
Reading this. As a old rural emt it's fun to know that city life is pretty comperable to rural. Well maybe not hiking into 70 yr old with broken femur who had been out all night after horse accident all alone. He was tougher than we were btw

Rescue 471 is a fantastic read. It steers away from a typical story following a persons every steps and instead is broken down into multiple short stories describing each call Peter went on. He details the events clearly and gives perspective to what it is like on a call as a paramedic. I love this book and it is a must read.

Great for a (hopefully) future medic
I loved this book. I want to be a firefighter/ paramedic once I'm old enough (junior firefighter now) so this gave me some great insight into the world of city EMS v. Small town EMS. It's even cooler that I live in CT and know 5 or 6 Hartford firefighter/ paramedics. If you have any interest in medicine then read it!

Great read and well worth looking at.
my only comment is on the quality of the paper which is a horrible cheap looking quality. the font size is small and crammed so tight that if you are reading it under a lamp, some of the sentences look as if they are all one word. I gave it 5 stars for the story content.
