Great DVDs for Maiden fans
"The Early Days" is a 2 DVD set that is ideal for major Iron Maiden fans; if you are a devotee of Maiden, you will not be disappointed, and if you are a fan of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal in general, these DVDs capture the golden age of that metal phenomenon.Disc 1 features 3 different concerts, the first feature Paul Di'Anno on vocals, the other two with Bruce Dickinson. The footage is presented as best it can, from oringal sources from the 80's, so the quality does not match "Rock in Rio" of course, but is still well-preserved. It was great to see Paul Di'Anno in concert, something I've never seen live or in video until I viewed these DVDs, and Bruce's performances stand out from his earliest days in the band. Especially interesting for me was the performance of "Revelations", a great song I've not heard live before, and also it features the only time I've seen Bruce play guitar.Disc 2 features a 90-minute new documentary that delves deep into the origin and history of the band. In the first years there were many line-up changes, and many original band members are included in the eye-opening interviews. Steve Harris's drive and determination and legendary bass-playing innovation are evident throughout the interviews. You will learn about the early venues and performances of Maiden, the powerful egos in the band, and the transition from pub acts to world tours. The "20th Century Box" segment on DVD 2 is an episode of the topical British Television programme that investigates the NWOBHM and focuses on Maiden. However, the television show is quite odd, with a strange artsy introduction and exit that is quite funny IMHO and feels like it's from the 1960's, and aside from Maiden, the show investigates a strange British phenomenon of cardboard guitars used by kids to emulate the hard-rocking stage acts of metal bands.Maiden fans will find lots of footage worth watching and will be pleased by the detail and care put into the transfers of concert footage and the production of the interviews. Some of it may be overkill for the casual fan; the greatest enjoyment will be for the dedicated Maiden fan, but the music and classic tale of hard working musicians make this a great value at the Amazon price.

Perfect documentary! Full concert films! Awesome, awesome awesome!
I have loved this band since I was a kid. Learning about how it all started, the ups and downs, the creativity, the legacy - it's all here! Plus, you get full concert films featuring the classic original lineup and the best version of the band with Nico and Bruce!!!Iron Maiden deserves a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and this documentary shows and tells you exactly why!!!

Can't Possibly Go Wrong With This One!!!
Having been an Iron Maiden fan for the better part of two decades, I have to say this DVD delivered waaaaayyyy more than I ever expected. From the production quality to the historical content, this disc is a full blown keeper!! Take it from someone who's banged his head to these brutal Brits since he was only twelve. If you fancy yourself a fan, buy this DVD. You will not be disappointed. I cannot wait until the next installment of this series hits the shelves. This disc made it all the more clear that it'll take a lot more than the abuse these guys suffered at Ozzfest in California this year to put them down for the count. The beast that is Maiden is a class act that just won't quit! Up the Irons!!

This is what the Maiden fans want to see!
Awesome DVD and documentary! Well done and I can phase out my "12 Wasted Years" VHS. This is what the fans want to see! With the release of "Live After Death" on DVD (which contains part 2 of the history), I wonder what they will do for "Somewhere in Time" and "Seventh Son". Personally, I would love to see a lot of the "Somewhere on Tour" footage and less of "Seventh Son" with its bland, all-white stage, but I fear Maiden will hose fans on that one. The Somewhere in Time tour had a cool stage, good props, and a great song list. If you don't know, the inflatable Eddie comes out during "Iron Maiden" and not "Stranger in a Strange Land" like in the music video.

Fantastic DVD
This is a great documentary. I've been a Maiden fan since the first album, but I lost interest after Seventh Son. This DVD has definitely renewed my interest. The look behind the scenes with Steve Harris and the insight into the lineup changes are really informative; I had no idea that Maiden had probably fifteen different members prior to the first album's release. The highlight for me is the Live at the Rainbow show. I remember watching this concert on MTV (when they played videos) back when I was about 11 years old; it blew me away then, and it was neat to be reminded how good and tight they were, even at this early stage in their career. I recommend this DVD 100%.

I rated this 4 stars because:
I have this Dortmund Germany concert on a 2 dvd set that I bought online and it has some audio problems but it still sounds good from a transfer of a show called Pop/Rock that has Ozzy Osbourne and The Scorpions and a few other performers on it and I think it's out of print but I'm gonna buy this one now because I think the sound and video have been improved upon compared to the one that I have that I will not now sell it looks like it was transferred from a VHS tape.at the beginning because there are some tape lines in it where the image wiggles a bit but I noticed the dvd does this also but it's excellent footage at Dortmund before Janick Gers joined the group and when Maiden were young and hungry.

Great Stuff
I really can't add anything to the terrific recap of Ed Baldhead below, so I won't be redundant. I just want to add to the glowing reviews of this great dvd set. I anxiously look forward to the next set which should include a remastered Live After Death, and with any luck a remastered Maiden England as well. The one I really want, however, will be the Dance of Death tour footage. Unfortunately we're going to have to wait until possibly a third installment.Anyway, this is a great dvd set with fun concerts and gives you insight into my personal favorite band. If you're unsure as to whether or not this is a worthy purchase, ponder it no more! Buy it and enjoy it forever! Up the irons!!

A great introduction to the band and so much content
I hardly ever write DVD reviews and in fact this maybe my first one. But I was compelled to do one after watching this one. Earlier this year I did a Tims Twitter Listening party number 666 where it was Iron Maiden's album "Powerslave". I have never listened to this album before and was greatly impressed. So much so I have been listening to a lot of Maiden recently. But I'm finding is there is so much of it and I didn't really know much about them. So, when I saw "The History of Iron Maiden....part 1" on Amazon I thought perfect. And perfect really is the word for it. There is an hour and half documentary on this which covers the bands formation in 1975 to roughly 1981 which therefore includes their debut album and second album Killers. I had no idea they had so many line-up changes before their debut even came out. The documentary has a lot of band member interviews both past and present and explains what happened over the early years with the various band members. What I didn't count on when buying this DVD was just how much live footage there would be. While they are not the long hour and half plus concerts, we are used to seeing now a days. There are 3 gigs with more in extras and live TV performances. I had to watch both discs over 2 nights, including one night where I sat and watched footage for 3 hours. There is just so much to it. And it is fantastic. For Maiden fans that have been with them since the start this serves as bringing back memories. But for people like me this and the many Maiden fans they have picked up in the last 40 years this really does act as an education and real eye opener into just how good they were straight off the bat. No wonder they went on to great things.I should note that if you are looking for DVDs but the DVDs aren't called Part 2, 3, 4 they are titled after the live performance for that era.

Iron Maiden The Early Days
