Jack of all trade but master of none
Bought this unit a few months ago.I had been using the A3 and the A2 units for those of you wanting to compare against this unit and those.Ubox9 PRO MAX is not really bad in the sense that the UI is decent, and the quality of the product is actually quite decent. Where it falls short of is what it's mainly used for, and in my case it's to watch foreign TV programs (specifically Hong Kong stuff).the UBox9 Pro MAX caters to a wider range of audience since it contains programs not just from Hong Kong, but Korea, Japan, and a lot of the other Asian countries and western countries as well. Now there in lies the problem... it's not designed specifically for Hong Kong stuff, so if you wanted to watch Hong Kong programs, you're better off getting the A3 box because there are more Hong Kong related stuff there... on the Ubox9 Pro MAX it has some of the hong kong variety shows there, but not as much as A3, so if there is a specific show you're hoping to watch, then the Ubox9 pro MAX may not have it.Furthermore, the playback feature for the Ubox9 Pro MAX only goes back 5 days, for the A3, it was 7 days. The playback feature also takes a lot longer to load on the Ubox9 pro MAX than it does the A3 box, most likely because the Ubox9 PRO MAX has to load 100 channels, but the A3 Box only loads like 23 or so. But really and truly, I'm not interested in the stuff from the other countries, so it might as well no be on it.the Ubox9 Pro MAX comes with 4GB of RAM, but the A3 only comes with 2GB, this was the main reason I went with a Ubox9 Pro MAX because it has more RAM so I'd assume it would load a lot faster, turns out that's not true, because there are so many other country's stuff on it, it actually loads a lot slower than the A3 box.And finally, most importantly stream speed.Hong Kong TVB stuff loads a lot faster on the A3 than the Ubox9 Pro MAX. I'm not sure if it's because A3 has better servers, closer servers to north america, or less customers... LOL... but trying to watch Family Feud TVB on the Ubox9 Pro MAX is a horrible experience, it always stops every few minutes to buffer, and then sometimes it starts back at the start of the show because of connection issues. (I've never had issues like this with my A3 with the same internet connection). You can download various apps on the Ubox9 Pro MAX like Netflix, it comes with its own VPN so that's pretty cool for people that need VPN to watch netflix, but drawback is the Netflix app is not designed for the remote controller or the UI of Ubox9 Pro MAX so trying to browse titles is a bit cumbersome (no streaming speed issues though, so I'm convinced the streaming speed issue is with their chinese servers for the chinese contents).Overall I give this product a 2 star, it has potential to be a 4 star product if they upgrade the bandwidth of their chinese servers, but unless we can stream chinese TVB stuff properly, then they can get no higher than 3 stars because the main purpose of this box is to watch foreign shows. If I wanted to watch Netflix then there are other devices that go for 1/4 of the price.Note: for those that already bought the device and are looking for the strawberry code, it's 1818... * wink *you're welcome!Edit1: after speaking to customer service it seems there are 3 players that can be chosen when playing back content, the default player was lagging, but the other one worked fine. They still get 3 stars and not 4 though because they have less HK content than the A3 boxes.Edit2: Still getting some lag when playing the playback contents, seems to suffer from buffering issues during peak hours (like weekends at nights). If they can add more bandwidth or more servers then that would be great.Edit3: I've used this for over 6 months now and have a pretty good feel for it. There is definitely a bandwidth issue with their north american servers that provide the saved TVB programs. My mother in law nags me day in day out about the constant slow loading time of her chinese TV shows to the point where it takes 15-20 seconds to load 1-2 seconds of video eventually to the point where the stream just starts over from the beginning. I'm contemplating buying a different brand of tv box at this point because the main reason for getting this was for her chinese tv shows. This box loads the Disney+ and Netflix shows just fine in HD, so it's definitely not my bandwidth issue (I'm on a 120Mbps download ISP which is more than enough for streaming sub HD quality TVB Series). With a heavy heart I'd recommend prospective buyers to look elsewhere unless they fix their bandwidth issue.
