The binding didn't hold up well.
More than one page popped out of the binding in more than one section of the book. I was still able to use it for class, but the loose pages were annoying. Expected better for the price.

Fantastic book, terrible purchase experience
This is the Bible of Cultural Resource Management and anyone working in the field needs to read it. It is a fantastic compendium of Dr King's experience and advice and may be the last edition he will write. I own the first edition from a course I took with Dr King 20+ years ago.Now for this purchase: when I saw the 4th edition on Amazon I proceeded to buy it but it is categorized as a text book so I mistakenly "rented" it when I meant to purchase it. I did turn the rental into a purchase months ago with the help of Amazon which was a bit of an ordeal, and now I keep getting notices to return the rental. Not very impressed by Amazon's rental service.

Not Necessarily What You Might Think, Though
This is not a law book, nor is it really about culture. It is about value that a certain demographic puts on something tangible or intangible. This would include social institutions, a person's beliefs (not necessarily religious, but that would be included as well), practices that have become normal or religious, perceptions and comfort. Songs, stories, dances, artifacts, plants, landscapes, rivers, animals, etc. King agrees that culture is big, complex, diverse, and subjective. I think that it is ok for an introductory class, but I wouldn't recommend it as a first book. Information on compliance, laws, NHPA (specifically Section 106) should be taught first, in my opinion.

Least painful to read
Compared to the majority of academic texts I have had to read, the writing in this makes it much better to get through. It's an easy read, and has a lot of great information for CRM. Definitely a worthwhile read for any archaeologist or person interested in the field.
