A Sequel Is Needed
I agree with all the positive comments already been said so I won't linger on the issue. I purchased both books (Sugar and This Bitter Earth) simultaneously. Both books are compelling and provocative. I read both books in about two days each. I couldn't put either down. I couldn't wait to finish work or chores to get back to reading. I slept with the book in the bed with me. If I woke up, I pick it up and begin reading. I sleep pattern was way off balance while reading those books. But what can I say, they grabbed my attention and didn't let go.Sugar was breathtaking and this Bitter Earth just kept the story flowing. I enjoyed the manner in which she weaved all her characters into place. Also, how This Bitter Earth revealed answers to questions in Sugar. Excellent storytelling. However, Lappy Clayton character is still a mystery. In my opinion, more should have been did to define him. Such as, what happened in his past that caused his personality to so warped to cause him to be so violent? Charpter 27, states: "Lappy would never understand what drove him to do the things he'd done".... but that was a weak explanation. With Lappy character so undeveloped, I believe that there will be a sequel. In addition, there are others characters that can be brought out in a sequel - Sugar's grandmother, Shirley Brown, also, what's with JJ, it appears that he is impotent but what caused it? Perhaps, his sister's brutal murder or something happened in the military or both. With all that being said, the bottom line is there was too much left unsaid for the story to end. A sequel most definitely is needed.

Exceptional wordsmith
I wished that I could superbly articulate how I feel about this book, this series. I will state that this author is an exceptional wordsmith. The storyline is engaging. The character development is phenomenal and the pacing was perfect. You can feel the texture and the tones through the words masterfully crafted by the author. I rejoiced with the main character Sugar as she uncovered painful truths to her heritage but through it found family and love. I will be reading more from this author. This series will stay with me for a long time.

Good read
The book but Disappointed in the ending but overall good. I wanted to know what happen to Mercy and if the family ever discuss the truth and did Suffer go talk to Shirley. So many unanswered questions.

Addicted to Sugar
I know when a book is good when I can't put it down and when I do I can't stop thinking about the characters. I just loved sugar even when she couldn't love herself. Such a great story about family, love and forgiveness. The friendship and love between sugar and pearl reminded me of the power of sisterhood whether it be by family, blood, or friendship. How they both helped to heal each other's hurts and brought out the best in each other. The church women judged sugar for being a prostitute and the church men slept with her behind there wives backs. But pearl and Joe saw something deep in sugar that was good just wounded and in need of tlc. A good reminder to us all not to judge. This book also had suspense of trying to figure out who murdered pearls daughter. This author truly made the characters and the ole south come to life and I recommend this book to those who like Oprahs book club choices. This is right up there! I'm looking forward to reading more of Bernice L. McFaddens books!

Film makers - get this story on screen....
Sugar, and the follow up; This Bitter Earth - absolutely brilliant!!! Two of the best books I've read in years. Loved the story, the characters and the authors utter style. Rather shocking reminder of how black people were treated by whites too. That really touched my heart. Bernice McFadden - wherever you go now, I will certainly follow! You're my new, exciting fave!!! :-)
