Columbo Classics
Columbo is a TV classic. The delight of the series is watching how magnificently the detective in the rumpled coat dissects the deadly work of brilliant killers and finds the thread of the single flaw in their scheme. The lineup of culprits Columbo faced was always impressive, and his foes here include Patrick McGoohan as a military school leader who will go to murderous lengths to see the pedigree of his precious academy maintained to his expectations, Robert Vaughn as a man who has the misfortune of murdering his mistress on a cruise ship where Columbo's on vacation, Dick Van Dyke as a photographer whose plans to split from his wife are more fatal then divorce, Robert Conrad as a gym franchise tycoon who gets rid of a troublesome business partner, George Hamilton as a psychiatrist whose unprofessional relationship with a patient results in murder and Oskar Werner as a technological genius who kills his mother in law. There are plenty of familiar guests stars in cool character roles, like Larry Storch as a driving instructor whose frustrated by his ride with Columbo. Fun moments abound, such as a scene in which clues lead Columbo to a soup kitchen where he is mistaken by a nun for a bum. These episodes are among Columbo's finest. Four episodes run around 1hour 30minutes while two clock in toward 70 mins.An episode of Mrs Columbo starring Kate Mulgrew is included as well. The show's not as great as Columbo, but interesting to view as a spinoff involving the wife spoken of but never witnessed in Columbo.

BAD DVDs
I love watching Columbo, I'm not exactly sure why as I never watched them when they were on TV. I was part of the Columbo of the month club and then have bought every DVD series they come out with...however, I have noticed that the DVDs are pretty cheap. There are several DVDs that just plain bad and I've reverted to watching the old videos I have. My favorite (which I still don't have yet!) is the one with I think Janet Leigh who murders her husband but forgets she did it. She keeps watching a movie of herself as a young woman in "Rosie" or "Walking my Baby". When will that one come out? Are there any Columbo fan clubs so we can all compare notes? And, I agree, Universal or whoever could at least give us a DVD without using side B? I think that's the problem. Whenever I have a two-sided DVD, I have a ton of trouble with it. And, would enjoy extra facts about making Columbo, etc on the DVDs. Anyway, enjoy Colombo fans! I am anxiously awaiting season 4 to arrive shortly and wondering when we'll get the next seasons out. Also love Etude in Black, By Dawn's Early Light and Murder by the Book. Also, Ransom for Dead Man is great however, I always wondered how Lee Grant could lift an 180 lb man and toss him in trunk and then down a hill? That's a blooper if you ask me. But the end is worth it and the stepdaughter's performance is great. My least favorite episode is Most Dangerous Match with the chess players. I really liked the old escargot-eating guy who was murdered...Columbo on!!!!!!

Perhaps the best of the best....
Definitely, Season 4 of Columbo is a winner replete with a number of excellent episodes that will provide hours of enjoyment."An Exercise in Fatality" with Robert Conrad as an owner of a string of health clubs who murders his partner, and "By Dawn's Early Light," about a military school commandant (Patrick McGoohan) who murders a trustee who wants to convert the military school to a co-ed community college, are clearly the best of the lot. What is fascinating about Columbo is not only the quality of the writing and the pacing of the episodes, but the remarkable cadre of top tier actors that appeared on the show: Jack Cassidy, Robert Vaughn, Dean Stockwell, George Hamilton, John Cassavettes, Oscar Werner, Lesley Ann Warren, Robert Culp, Leslie Nielsen, Janet Leigh, and Gena Rowlands to name a few.If you buy only one season of Columbo, make it Season 4. Unfortunately, the only extra is another dull and completely unnecessary episode of Ms. Columbo "Caviar with Everything." Still, no interviews or extras clearly leave Columbo fans disappointed with the hope that future boxed sets will have something more enticing to watch--even an episode of the ridiculous "A-Team" would be more welcome than Ms. Columbo. To address the problems many other Amazon reviewers have been experiencing with their DVD sets, I can say my set works just fine with no malfunctions. I might suggest that keeping your DVDs in their plastic sleeves and refraining from using them as coasters when not in use might help. If that doesn't work, invest in a better DVD player.

Classic Seventies Detective Series
There were quite a few fine police/detective shows on network television in the 1970s, and one of the most renowned of them was "Columbo." The series saw Peter Falk star as Lieutenant Columbo of the Los Angeles Police Department, and this DVD set contains all six made-for-TV movies that comprised the show's fourth season which originally aired on NBC from September 1974 to April 1975."Columbo" was a different sort of mystery show in that the viewer knew early on in each episode which character committed the murder and then saw the case solved. The villains in the episodes usually believe they will not be found out, many even more so when they find that Columbo has been assigned to the investigation. They eventually find that even though Columbo has an unassuming manner, short stature, and slightly disheveled appearance, he is not to be underestimated--his incisive mind and uncanny intuition lead him to see holes in the perpetrators' stories and enable him to persevere in asking the right questions until the cases are solved. The fourth season of "Columbo" featured well-known guest stars such as Dick Van Dyke, Patrick McGoohan, and George Hamilton. Younger viewers today would probably enjoy seeing the clothes and cars that were popular in the mid-Seventies as well as seeing older types of phones, tape recorders, and other objects from back then, but fans of all ages who enjoy police dramas would enjoy this classic series.

Columbo at its peak
This is one of, if not THE best series of Columbo ever made. The scripts are sharp, the acting very good and Peter Falk had nailed the character perfectly by this stage.Take the episode 'A Deadly State of Mind', which has one of the great Columbo endings. A Doctor has murdered the husband of a patient of his, and the only witness is a blind man, who hears him leave the premises. Columbo tricks the Doctor, who incriminates himself. Its absolute magic and the way Columbo outwits him is so clever. Also worth a special mention is the Dick Van Dyke episode 'Negative Reaction', which is also a little gem; with another classic ending. Credit to Dick Van Dyke who plays the role of the murderer who thinks he's much cleverer than Columbo to perfection.Sadly as with all the Columbo releases that I've got there aren't any extras worth talking about. Mrs Columbo isn't very good! Hopefully one day they will release some interviews and outtakes with some of most important people involved in the many series. But until then you can't do much better than buy this.
