An amazing and positive read!
This book had me riveted! It is the story of a true survivor, a woman who overcame all odds, not just to become a doctor, her chosen path, but one preeminent in different fields. There are many self help books, but this is a true story with many positive messages on how to overcome hurdles in real life situations. Elizabeth has found serenity and happiness, and success in all aspects of her life. I found myself wishing it was longer, and everyone in my house loved it!

Anyone struggling to achieve their aspirations in our unfair world will be inspired by this book.
This book starts with a disturbing portrait of family life in the British Army in the 50s and 60s. The author overcomes hurdle after hurdle to qualify as a doctor and works marathon hours year-in, year-out to provide the best possible care for patients in the NHS and to strive for scientific advances in the laboratory. Elizabeth encounters more than her fair share of challenges and downright obstructions in her career both in the UK and the USA.Anyone struggling to achieve their aspirations in our unfair world will be inspired by this book. It would make an amazing film.

An inspirational account of triumph against the odds
Dr. Fagan is a renowned hepatologist who has achieved a huge amount in clinical medicine, medical science, and in the biotechnology/pharmaceutical industries. What is astonishing is that to do so she has had to overcome poverty, a difficult and violent home life, illness, and appalling treatment by some of her senior colleagues. As the title indicates, she has been resolute and often an outsider. Equally, her humanity – a deep commitment to medicine, justice, and fairness – shines brightly throughout.

Overcoming the Odds with Grit and Passion
Elizabeth Fagan’s account of her emergence from a childhood of poverty and abuse into the upper echelons of Britain’s medical and scientific establishment is an inspiration for all those other “outsiders” who don’t quite fit in, but who have the grit and smarts to outwork everybody else in the pursuit of a career they are passionate about.

An inspiring, compelling story of overcoming obstacles!
In addition to being a well written, inspiring story of overcoming challenges, it is a strong message of the value of reaching out to those who feel they are outsiders. As a bonus, I learned a lot about the medical and academic professions in the UK and USA. A great read!John Benner

Determination and perseverance
What an inspiring story of perseverance despite many odds that would have stopped others in their tracks. Just a brilliant, humble and determined person who knew what she wanted. A must read for those who face similar challenges of discrimination and prejudice. Congratulations to Dr. Fagan!
