Paul Cézanne is widely recognized as one of the founders of modern art. A self-taught painter, Cézanne (French, 1839-1906) kept abreast of the latest styles and philosophies at a time when Paris was bursting with creative vitality--all the while forming his own unique artistic expression. His analytical approach to painting--an attempt to represent the structure, or geometry, underlying nature and all his subjects--challenged the spontaneity of Impressionism and influenced many avant-garde movements of the twentieth century, including Cubism and Fauvism. In his 1925 book, "The Art in Painting," Dr. Albert C. Barnes wrote, "Cézanne ranks with the greatest painters of all ages... He rendered the essential qualities of...feelings stripped of the irrelevant and the accidental, and endowed them with the pervasive mystery, power, and charm that make them moving, vital, and beautiful." Many of Paul Cézanne's important works--including his 1890-1892 painting Card Players (Les Joueurs de cartes), reproduced in this puzzle--are in teh collection of The Barnes Foundation, which was established by Dr. Barnes in 1922 to promote the advancement of education and the appreciation of the fine arts.
