it still makes a good read.
A fascinating account of Japanese history, linking facts and events, causes and effects, to show a comprehensive picture of the nation's past. Much as it is informative and extensive, it still makes a good read.

Love the chronological order of this book
Love the chronological order of this book. Took my first Asian History class with this textbook, and found it very interesting and engaging. Recommend this to anyone who wants to learn about Japanese history.

Beautifully Written
One of the easiest textbooks to read. I wish all history books were as easy to follow as this one. I just wish the font was a little larger.

Not good for general readers
The reason I picked up this book was clear. I wanted to know how Japan could be the only country that was successfully converted to the industrialized nation among the other Asian countries in the era. Therefore, my focus was on the times around Meiji Restoration. In that perspective, I didn't feel this book answered my question satisfactorily. I hoped to learn the modernization process of Japan in relation to other neighboring countries, China and Korea, but I couldn't find much about it. It covers broad spectrum of the social/political conditions of modern Japan, but overall, the way it was written is very dry and monotonous. Like the other reviewer mentioned, this book reads like college textbook, and it will fit good for that purpose.

Very informative
I got this book for a class I was taking on Japanese Film and Literature. Although I'm not fond of history readings because they pretty much can't help but to be dry...this wasn't bad at all.

Quality control
Very expensive book. $52. Half of the index is missing. There is no index after Mori Ogai.
