But the truth is, there is not a magic number for this question, and any brand that has one is providing an estimate, not a concrete number. The reality is, it depends on what kind of water you're filtering. If you're filtering water that has a lot of silt, mud, sand, etc., the filter won't last as long because it's working a lot harder to filter out debris. If the water is relatively clean, like untreated tap water, river water, well water, etc., it will last much longer. Unlike carbon-based filters, hollow-fiber membranes don't have a limit on their lifespan unless they are damaged. Based on the data we have from our filters deployed in over 30 countries, we know the average lifespan for our replaceable filter cartridge is 3 years under daily use liters/day for a family of 5. Many of these filters are being used to filter bore-hole water that has a high sediment content, so you can expect a longer lifespan if you're filtering water with less particulate matter.
