Jacob's Eye Patch

Thank you thank you THANK YOU!
My son has been wearing an eye patch since he was a baby (he's now 4.5) and I'm so happy Beth Kobliner and Jacob Shaw wrote this book. It completely captures my son's experience and he can relate to so much in the story! Thank you thank you THANK YOU! Now he has a book about a boy just like him and we all love it.In addition to children who patch, I think this book would also be great for kids (and adults!) who have never seen anyone with an eye patch before, to promote some awareness and sensitivity. Kids don't enjoy it when you point at them and shout "What happened to your eye?!" and sadly this happens to my son a lot. I think this book will help patchers become more comfortable with answering questions and others more tactful about asking them.

Helpful book for any child who needs to wear an eye patch.
Our daughter had to start patching in January. We bought this to help her adjust to the situation and understand that other kids need to wear patches, too. It's a great book, because Jacob's entire family supports him and it explains the reason behind patching several different ways. It also addresses that sometimes Jacob doesn't feel like talking about his patch. Jacob is a real boy and there is a picture of him at the end of the book. Our daughter doesn't need to wear her patch more than a few hours and rarely does it in public, but this was still helpful for her in adapting to the situation. Her only complaint was that it wasn't about a girl.

I bought this book for my 7 yr old son (w Aspergers) who has worn eye patches for a few years now but always gets very quiet when facing questions about it. Until we read this book together, he never talked about they make him feel. The author did a great job treating this subject in a way that resonates w my son and gets him talking: it's not forever, people are just curious, you can choose when to answer, other kids have differences, too. Great book. My 9 yr old wants to wear a patch now! LOL I love it.

Thanks to the author for writing an adorable book to help my daughter ease into wearing a patch, 5 out of 7 days a week in front of other kids at day care. This book is on the Ohio Amblyope Registry information sheet and for good reason. It's especially great because my daughter could see a picture of the real Jacob at the end of the book, so she felt cool being like that real person. Hope your eyes are all better Jacob!

Perfect for new or experienced patchers and non-patchers alike!
My 2 year old recently started his patching journey and this book has been a big hit! Perfect for new (or experienced!) patchers, as it shows patching as just a normal part of life. Jacob gets frustrated at other people's questions when he's in a big hurry but it doesn't show him being embarrassed or frustrated with the patch itself. The illustrations are adorable and even my non-patching kids love to read it!

Helped my son get over patching insecurities
My 6 year old loved this book. He was just starting to patch and felt very self-conscious about doing it however, reading another boy's story really helped. Granted, it's not a book that we will read over and over again, but well worth the money as it helped him get over his early insecurities about the patch. Another great thing about this book (which I realize will not help most of you out there) is that my son's name actually is Jacob, and he believed that this book was tailor-made for him :-) (Note to author - consider the option of personalizing the book.)

Must have book for little ones with eye patches
My little one (3y/o) recently started wearing an eye patch for a few hours each day. This book has been great for her and her older sister. My older daughter was worried people would stare or make fun of her sister for wearing an eye patch and this book has settled those fears and explains nicely that it is ok to have questions. Everyone has something that is a little different about them and this book puts it all very nicely.

A Refreshing Take on Differences
This beautiful little book takes a lighthearted and refreshing look at what it means to be "different" and the unexpected joys and hassles that can come from being a kid wearing an eye patch. It will help children and adults talk about how we respond to differences -- both ours and others -- and it does so without being preachy or precious. This book brought a smile to my face and left me thinking. My only regret is that it wasn't around when I was a child and again when I was rearing my own young one.

Helpful
A bit more worn than described but extremely good book to help my son understand that he may get questions about the eye patch he has to wear

Appealing to adults, not to my kid
Lovely book, great idea, but my four year old who has started patching just hates this book. I don’t know why.

Amazing book really captured the imagination of the children
Amazing book really captured the imagination of the children. However the pictures could be much better. It was hard to see Jacobs patch clearly more real pictures would be so much better.
