Wind and Strategy

Pros:Brilliant and deep information about sailing. Buy it and struggle through the complex sentences. I suggest putting commas to separate ideas. The editors won't let authors do this, instead preferring minimal notation, but it sure helps the reader to separate ideas in long sentences.Cons:Wind and Strategy by Walker, is written too technically for anyone starting out and it lacks the pictures necessary for clarity though it does have a few. Yes I've sail raced before at a military high school so I know the basics and still I find it lacking.Leaving out an introductory chapter to review the naming conventions of sail racing is STUPID making this book unsuitable for any new audience; a boatload of information though for the multi year fully experienced sailer, all others will be lost.If you've been sailing like 2 years, and seen the many sailing situations, and are lucky enough to use terminology the way he does on your boat crew, then it might be understandable but for all others it will be bewildering.

I bought this book because it does such an excellent job of analyzing local wind patterns. Especially Southern California, where I grew up and knew the patterns well, but the book still added a lot to my understanding of these wind patters.

I've been racing on inland lakes for decades. Dr Walker has given me insight into what I've been doing all this time. It's a great book, especially if you know how to study Talmud. You have to read it line by line. Going on Topo to study the lake and river maps are a must...but well worth it. Never hurts to map things out on powerpoint. Dr Walker has won a lot of races for good reason. He is the wind maven and has written an important body of sailing literature. He will bust your brain, but ultimately one realizes that his sentences do make alot of sense.

This is a classic! One of the best micro-scale weather books ever written. I bought this copy to replace one I gave to the instructors at my yacht club to use in developing the learn to sail course for beginners.

Great book. Excellent description of the fundamentals of weather leading to how to use it on the boat. Walkers writing can be dense, but i like that level of detail.
