Great for Beginners
I have never done wood burning before, but always interested in learning a new talent. I got this kit to learn with and I have enjoyed learning with it. The various shaped nibs create different types of lines and the temperature dials are easy to understand. This kit has been an amazing experience and I plan on doing more and more with it as I learn.

Definite step up from solid-point burner; works well on various media
When I bought this kit, I wasn't sure whether it would reach the temperature needed for working on watercolor paper. I shouldn't have worried; it can make nice, dark marks on watercolor paper, pine, and basswood, and it also works well for lighter shading at cooler temperatures. The temperature dial is a little finicky; even though there are markings around it to indicate a general idea of how close to the highest temperature you are, those lines are not marked with numbers, and for good reason—the temperature at those marks is a little different every time the machine is used. That makes it difficult to tell where exactly to put the dial to pick up where you left off on a pyrography piece. Fortunately, the pen both heats up and cools down quickly, so that isn't too much of a problem; a quick adjustment can get you where you need to be.For the most part, the upgraded tips are nice. The polished surfaces move along even harder-grained pine fairly easily, and the beveled parts can be used for different effects; these tips seem to combine the better parts of both solid-point and wire tips. However, because the shaders are straight instead of bent at an angle, the handle of the pen sometimes hits the burning surface during shading. As far as accessibility goes, this pen kit is much more ergonomic and easier to use with arthritic fingers and carpal tunnel syndrome than solid-point burners are. The pen is lighter and not as broad, although it's plenty wide enough for comfort. The quick warm-up and cool-down times make it easier to take breaks when needed. However, changing tips does require a screwdriver, and the screws are tiny and short, making them difficult to work with and easy to drop/lose. A magnetic screwdriver might be a handy tool to keep with the kit.Overall, this is a decent set for someone who has worked with a solid-point pen for a while and wants to try wire tips. It doesn't have all the features of some of the higher-priced sets, but it's a good entry point for the pen type, and you will still be able to make wonderful art with it, on multiple types of media. However, I hesitate to recommend it to absolute beginners in pyrography because it does not come with much of an instruction manual. There's nothing to tell you what the different types of tips do, there's little help with troubleshooting, and there's not much about safety information. So here's a little information on that:If you're seeing actual sparks and the body of the pen is heating up as much as if not more than the tip, the tip may not be pushed in far enough. I stopped when I first met resistance, and apparently that wasn't quite far enough. On my second try, I pushed again and felt a little pop when the tip was where it needed to be. If it is in all the way and you're still getting sparks, check the screws. Those should be tightened, but with these, you should stop once you meet resistance; otherwise, you might bend the prongs. As for safety, be careful with what you're burning and make sure you have some ventilation. Burning releases components of what you're burning, and some of these can be dangerous to breathe in. It's safest to stick with raw, untreated materials that don't contain glues or binders and to research what you want to burn before you begin.
