funny, scrappy, and full of heart
This book is a total gem. Brave girls, grubby picnics, tree-bed sleepovers, and a terrifying Workhouse looming in the background. Lucy and Kittyโs friendship is funny, scrappy, and full of heart. Victorian London has never felt so lively โ or so dangerous. Five stars, no question.

It hurt me
I'm a long time reader and fan of Jacqueline Wilson. Her books are so simple yet extraordinary insightful and moving. As an adult, her stories catapult me to the realms of children and teenagers that help me remember the pains, agonies and triumphs of my own youth. None of her books have done it more so than The Runaway Girls. Two vulnerable youngsters alone in Victorian England, gutsy and gullible, this raw tale bashed my emotions about like a rag doll as I rooted and cried for Lucy and Kitty. Dame Wilson always delivers, and this book rode right up my street and knocked down the front door. By far, my favourite of her legion , legendary works. She never lets me down, and this book took my breath and stole my heart.
