Great book on a critically important topic
Cross-Cultural Management book is more of a university class level book than a casual book for reading at home. Despite that, it is a very well written book on an extremely important topic in management. Having worked for a Fortune 500 company with a large global presence, I can't state how important it is for university students and current management individuals to understand how culture plays into how you effectively manage global teams. I wrote a dissertation on the subject of leadership, cultural competence, and technology project success. In my position at the global company, there was no interest in any cross-cultural training despite placing U.S. based management in charge of global offices and employees. With increasing usage of offshore and outsourced resources, it is critically important for students coming out of universities to understand how working with different cultures changes how they should manage. In my position at the global company I had to adapt my leadership style based on each global office and employees I had to interact with. The book itself is well organized, starting off with general management and culture, moving on to the role of a global manager, and finishing up with the challenges of global management. I found the information provided in the book to be on target, well written, and presented in a way that is easy to understand. The chapter I could associate the most with is chapter 7 on motivation and leadership across cultures. This is a very important subject when you are leading employees across distance and time. The chapter goes over western leadership theories and leadership theories in different part of the world. What works in the U.S may not work in other regions of the world. It is important for western leaders to understand the differences and how leadership is perceived in different parts of the world. I highly recommend this book as an introduction to cultural, cultural issues in management, and the role of management in global operations. Whether you are a university student or a seasoned leader, this book will help open your eyes to what global management is and how it is influenced by local cultures.Dr. G

Very thorough and well-presented information
This is a thorough and well-written book. I found it to be very accessible and straightforward to read. It is a textbook and it appropriate for undergraduate or masters level students, or as a reference book for researchers. It's well organized starting out with the first section on Management and Culture, which covers fundamentals and gives a broad overview of culture and management. The second section focuses on the roles of the global manager, which covers the manager in the roles as decision-maker, negotiator, and leader, and to me this was the most interesting chapter and it will be useful in the leadership training I do with students. The third section focuses on challenges, and is also well-presented and thorough, and the chapter on future challenges was very interesting. Overall, a very nice resource and I am glad to have in my library.
