Grandson loves these, comes up with so many designs on his own.

The GeoSmart Starship kit was an instant sensation with my six-year-old grandson, his four-year-old sister, and my son - who grew up on a steady diet of building toys, from Legos to complicated roller coasters. He's a structural engineer now, building earthquake-safe skyscrapers, and his son seems to have that same building-bug in his system.The Starship set is a learning toy, a building set that promises to help kids understand physics. It's called a STEM toy and I had no idea what it meant, so I looked it up and it's pretty cool: " STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, but what STEM education focuses on is much more than these four subjects. The focus of STEM education is how these subjects relate to each other and the real world. That means that these subjects need to be taught together and be focused on problem solving."Not just pretty cool, very cool. I never understood physics or math myself and a toy that helps kids understand such concepts with real world hands-on experiences is a great thing. That said, GeoSmart Starship is a 42-piece kit including 6 different geometric shapes - 6 triangles, 10 squares, 4 rectangles, 4 trapezoids, 12 isosceles triangles and 6 diamonds. They all have magnents inside the colorful polycarbonate exteriors. The magnets are locked in with stainless steel caps and aren't going anywhere.The set is well-made and very durable and you can make all sorts of "starships" out of the pieces. Imagination, however, makes what you can build limitless - my little granddaughter promptly built a house. My grandson made a skyscraper like his daddy does. Honestly, these building pieces don't really look like starships to me any more than they look like anything else. What they create is all in the mind's eye and it's absolutely terrific.This is the kind of toy that makes kids think while they're having fun. More fun times with this set of Geosmart shapes. I'm definitely not kid aged and I enjoy putting the different shapes together and seeing what happens. Of not with this set, you will only get different shapes, not wheels, spinners, etc. So this set supplements with extra shapes other sets that have the wheels, etc. Not that you can't have fun with this set on it's own. I don't know if they make them yet, but it will be nice if and when you can get some of the more optional items like wheels, spinners, lights and things in smaller packages. It would really help with the possibilities of using these sets especially when sharing between more than one kid.This granny want to be thinks these are an A+++ gift item for kids 5+ and up that you would like to see DOING something other than playing computer games.

These are a wonderful hit in my home. My 2 year old, 6 year old, and 9 year old all play with them. We even had a 13 year old come over and end up tinkering with them. Adults even enjoy them!! The set is just large enough to allow for one person to build an average sized construction. The pieces from this brand are comparable to more expensive brands and are very durable. I like that the magnets are reinforced for safety. The hazards of magnets and children are well known and this brand has taken extra steps to ensure no children are hurt with their product. Excellent set, well worth investing in.

We have a couple of these sets and they are a lot of fun. My 4 year old really likes them, and can put together different shapes. The starship is pretty cool, although not as much starship as I was expecting.This set has enough pieces (42 of them) to make quite a few different items, and the magnets are very strong and we haven't had any quality issues with them (some of the old old magnet sets we had the magnets always fell out, these look like it can't really happen, which is great).

....this set teaches kids science and math while they play.which, in itself, is cool.but after the kids built some things with this set, i made them set their creations down and look at them as ART.the colors, shapes, etc.the oldest is a Lego-hound, so this was great to introduce to get different though processes churning.very impressed with the concept and the manufacture.definitely recommend to anyone who has kids and wants their play to transfer seamlessly into "learning".

My 7 year old twins love this set and their older brother and sister will try to insert themselves into the mix as well, and even my two year old niece likes to get in on the act. There is just something endlessly satisfying about magnet based toys that keeps them playing long after they would have abandoned other toys. Moreover, they are well constructed and I have no doubt that they will prove durable over the long haul.

This has contributed to hours of fun for my granddaughters. They love to put the ships together and try to see which one of them can make the most extravagant construction of their own. I love how this makes them think and use their imagination. This is a great alternative to them sitting in front of a screen all day. Definately for both boys and girls.
