Plug in the power, plug in the LAN cables... you're set!
Nice features for a reasonable price. Simple plug & play, nothing needs to be set, perfect "unmanaged" type switch for home networks. Seems to work quite well, displays different color lights when they sense my gigabit devices (all run at full speed with this switch), backward compatability to lower LAN speeds so also works just fine with my slower devices. Low energy consumption, handy keyhole slots for wall mount.8 ports seems to be the right number for home setups. Not many people would ever need more than eight in the same area... four port setups will likely leave you wishing for more in the not-so-near future, the price difference is minimal. BUT... if all you need it for is to add a couple ports in the same area as your existing 4 port router, then the 4 port model would make more sense for you.I'm using this as a distribution point for my various downstairs home theater devices + a laptop in the same area. Router/office is upstairs on the other side of the house. Previously depended on wireless connections downstairs, but even with a good dual band AC wireless router things sometimes dropped connections or ran slow, now with a hard wired LAN connection via this switch those problems have been resolved. And now there's more wireless bandwith left for things like Amazon Echo's/Dot's and home automation devices. If your device can operate via both wireless and LAN, you will almost always get faster and more reliable performance using the wired LAN connection..First one sent to me was obviously someone else's return (grrrr), some of the factory packaging was absent, so the switch and power supply went through the mail slamming against each other. Returned for replacement without ever using it, the replacement arrived quickly, was correct with shrink wrap on the outside and the rest was in place inside as it should be to prevent shipping damage.

Can We Communicate?
I bought this a while ago, not knowing if I was really going to need it, so it sat on a shelf for a while, but when I subsequently needed it, it worked straight out of the box and is easy to set up.

A Reliable Switch for your Home Network
I am writing this review after purchasing my third D-Link 8-Port Gigabit Switch. I have owned several switches from several manufacturers in the past and without a doubt this switches run themselves. Even if your have zero to low experience building a network the D-Link 8-Port Gigabit Switch makes it easy for you; all you have to do is plug in your cables and it will do the magic for you.I am amazed to how effective this switch is. I always had some type of problems with other swiches in the past but it is a thing of the past with this product. I bought my first D-Link 8-Port Gigabit over a year ago and it worked so smooth and was so easy to setup that I decided to buy a second one 6 months later. My network was running so good that I grew extremetly proud of my accomplishments and I decided to add a line to every room in the house and to every where there was a piece of equipment that could be added to the network. I have a 5 bedrooms house and every room has a HD TV with access to Netflix, Hulu, and my video library either through the Smart TV Hub, Game console, or Logitech Revue. Every room in the house is network using one of the 3 D-Link 8-Port Gigabit Switches and the network work without a glitch. I can enjoy 1080p video from my movie and video library in multiple HD TVs at the same time. I do not remember the last time I had a network problem.HOW SIMPLE IS IT?In 3 steps:1 - Plug in your cat5, cat5e or cat6 (I recommend you buy cat6 since this is a Gigabit router)cable from your modem to any port in your D-Link 8-Port Gigabit Switch2 - Plug another cable from your switch (any port) to your device3 - Enjoy your network

Still works after 12.5 years
Purchased December 15th 2011 for $35 new on Amazon. It is now May 5th 2024 and the switch is still working flawlessly. When purchased I had 100mbps internet and now I have 1gb fiber. I've gone through probably 6 routers and 3 or 4 modems since then but the switch still serves my needs.I was just contemplating a new router and remembered this switch. I looked on my old orders to discover when it was purchased. After reading some more recent reviews where people are saying theirs failed fast I decided to share my experience. Maybe like many other things they don't make them like they used to.

Great 8-portGbit Switch!
Overall Great value. Very slight issues kept it from being 5 stars overall.PRO:So simple to install. Plugged it in and moved LAN cables over one at a time from existing 4-port Switch.Everything connected automatically.Very Compact design.Very reasonable price for the functionality you get.CON:Only 8 ports total. One is taken to connect to the router, so only 7 output ports are actually available.Made of plastic. Might last forever, but don't really know yet.Couple of ports not running at full Gbit speed, but that might be the devices rather than the Switch.
