It does what is says and have no issues
I was almost not going to get this one due to the bad reviews with some noise and quality but with the guaranty return, I gave it a try. I did not regret it one bit. It does what it says, I don't have any issues at all, no weird noise or issues. It works as it is designed. I think the other reviews that have issues with noise, their issues are not this unit but their audio source or cables or something. I have used this device on several Amplifiers to be sure it performs great and it does on all of them. If you have the system at full volume and no audio, you do get some weird noise but for what I use this for, I never leave the volume all the way up without audio playing. It does work for me so those are my 2 cents for this device.

Has significant delay ... making unusable for applications where sync with video is important.
Decoded audio fine, but introduced a significant delay so that my TV video and audio were not in sync when using this device to decode the TV optical audio output. Probably fine for a pure audio use case, but it didn't work for me.

Quality control problems. Good luck getting one without issues.
I ended up buying two of these. The first one has problems with occasional popping and crackling. Annoying, but not bad enough to be totally unusable. I decided to buy a second one considering how inexpensive they are. I figured I'd just keep the first one as a backup. When I went to purchase another (less than a week after the first) I see the price had gone up around $5. Same vendor. Hmmm.I bought it anyway and when it arrived all seemed fine at first. The popping and crackling was gone. Then, after using it for about a day the second one started exhibiting a much more serious problem. It would intermittently just cut-out for a few seconds and then usually start working again, Most of the time - but not always. Eventually it would not start working again after it cut-out and I was forced to either reboot it, or press the 5.1/2.1 button on the back to get it working again for a little while. On the subject of the 2.1/5.1 button on the back, the function of it is not explained in the manual (the manual is chinglish and almost useless anyway). Pressing this button seems to do nothing with respect to changing from 2.1 to 5.1 as you would expect. In summary, I returned the second one to Amazon and got a prompt refund. I decided to live with the first one and the occasional popping and crackling. The main reason I decided to do so was because I couldn't find an alternative that was clearly a different design without spending a LOT more money.

Decent item
It's good but lowers sound quality quite a bit.

Not what I espected
Not so bad at all... But I have some issues with both toslink (optical) inputs. They play some sound in short stances of time. And the analog 3.5mm audio input worked, but with a very loud hissing noise. I think this noise is normally produced by electric interference, but come on! What's the deal?! DTS and Dolby are technologies that uses complex algorithms to clear this annoying hiss noise, ar'nt they?

Worth it
Works good no problems

Heed buzzing sound warnings
I saw the reviews, but thought no one would seriously sell any type of sound based product with built in buzzing sound. I can confirm that the buzzing is constant and loud enough to be annoying and unacceptable. I am returning!

The decoder/converter works but is noisy....
The product does what it says, but the 5.1 output is considerably noisy - with a static digital noise. The 2.1 setting is much less noisy, so I assume the chip doing the 5.1 decoding/converting is the problem.....
