A switch must own!
If you like playstation or Saturn style 2D games, don’t pass this by. It’s quite challenging and I love the story. Music and animation is something thats rare in games today.

Our half-genie heroine looking the best she has yet
Half-Genie Hero is something of a soft reboot for the Shantae series, at least in spirit - where Risky's Revenge and Pirate's Curse continually built off the original story, Half-Genie Hero feels like a bit of a reset and back to the basics. While I like the sprite work of the older games, the highly animated vector art appearance of this game is gorgeous, and the 2.5D approach to the backgrounds is excellent. Not to mention the soundtrack, which is some of Jake Kaufman's very finest work for the series - so many lush, catchy tunes! On a visual and auditory level, this is an easy 10/10.The game is very good and a good starting place for a new Shantae player (though I'd definitely urge them to check out the few that came before it, especially Pirate's Curse). However, I lament the more linear structure of its level design. The Shantae series is a Metroidvania at heart so I was a little disappointed when I first played this game years ago on the Wii U to find the more labyrinthine structure replaced with a more conventional, linear format. I like regular platformers too, but the problem is this makes exploring to find new things after acquiring powerups feel more like backtracking than exploring. I'm not opposed to having a quick warp in the form of Sky's bird Wrench, but using it as a main mode of travel as opposed to the areas between towns that existed in the older games creates a disconnect between the player and the world of the game, too. It would have been much better to have this added in as a feature later on, like after you find Wrench's whistle. Besides the structure of the game, it would have greatly helped the length as well as I feel this is a pretty breezy experience; I beat the game and found all the collectibles in roughly 7 hours, maybe even less. Now, I'd much rather an enjoyable 7 hours than a dragging-on-and-on 20, but I still left the game, both the first time I played it years ago and now again on the Switch, to be distinctively missing something. In spite of its simplicity of design and short length, however, I would still recommend buying Half-Genie Hero, especially if you already like Shantae. This edition is great too because it includes all the DLC that was released, which definitely pads out the time you'll be spending with it! I haven't played these all, but I played Slumber Party and Friends to the End all the way through and enjoyed both experiences a lot. Friends to the End in particular really restructures the gameplay and gets genuinely very challenging at times. They're also great just to see more character interactions, including some laugh out loud moments.
