Both magnify on one side. I prefer the rectangular shape because it fits perfectly in my inside purse pocket. There are more expensive ones but these are sufficient, just to check your face quickly.

My son got braces recently and needed a mirror he could take with him to reapply his rubber bands. The mirrors are compact and can be pulled out easily from pocket or backpack especially after lunch time
