Lonely Planet Taiwan (Country Guide)

Comprehensive and approachable guide to visiting Taiwan.
I picked up this guidebook for a two week trip in November to Taiwan. I used it to not only plan my time in Taipei, but also plan the first week, which was spent on the southern and eastern coasts (Kenting and Hualien). The organization of the book into various regions was extremely helpful for planning purposes as I wanted to make sure I saw culturally important things and not just touristy things. The fact that it listed The nearest MRT stop to each location in Taipei was also super useful as I could plan my trip around walking and using my Easycard. The information about exchanging money and cell phone carriers proved essential as well. Taiwan has really good cell phone coverage in my experience, with speeds on my iPhone 6 exceeding what I get on my iPhone Xs in Seattle. This made it really easy to consult the various favorited/bookmarked places I entered into Google maps when I was stateside.

Allowed us to plan & have a great trip
This comprehensive guide to Taiwan with the companion pocket Taipei allowed us to easily see Taipei, the surrounding areas and take day trips, all on our own. The maps were invaluable; the restaurant tips accurate. I liked the features that listed the top sights and how to see them. No book has everything; we had a second book with additional information. But if you only have one, Lonely Planet will tell you almost everything.

Best travel companion for Taiwan Travels!
This was a great book to take on my recent trip to Taiwan. The book was easy to read and was referenced constantly as we navigated our way through the various cities and countryside of Taiwan looking for delicious food and remarkable scenery. My favorite portion of the book was the walking tour of Tainan (the original capital of Taiwan). With the help of this Book, we were able to see over a dozen temples with an easy to use walking map. I highly recommend picking up this travel guide for your upcoming adventure!

Books Are for Boomers?
Even in the digital age it's useful to have this to explore for weeks beforehand, on the plane, in the hotel. The removable map was specifically for the areas east and south of the rivers which was perfect for me but might not be for you. Compared to online, some of the general info was surprisingly out of date, such as financial and political issues which have been resolved.

Not the best but sadly, few other options
We've been in Taipei now for 6 weeks with this as the only guide book we brought - I wish there had been other options. There's a lot in this city the guide book misses, and some it has flat out wrong. We've gone to some of the places that are highly recommended (like the Miniature Museum and Bopiliao) and wondered why they were so highly regarded and found other places (like the powerful AMA Museum) that are great and not even mentioned. The organization of Taipei in this book, while it's set up how the locals do it, by city regions, is very confusing to a non-local. I got the impression that it was written by a gay bicyclist because that seemed to be the bulk of the information. But even that wasn't the best - my husband, an avid biker, looked up the recommended websites for bike routes, and none of them were working. Hopefully they'll make this guide better - but for now, I think it's one of the few out there, so you're kind of stuck.

Nice
Phenomenal book. Helped me a lot in my travels. I also suggest getting lonely planet's mandarin handbook if you need help with some basic Mandarin phrases. Find Taiwanese Mandarin materials if you want to study further. This book has some language help, enough to get by for sure.
