al-Ghazzali On the Treatment of Anger, Hatred and Envy (Alchemy of Happiness)
S**H
Al Ghazali is an excellent author when it comes to purification of the heart (nafs).
This is a brief summary of the subjects on Anger, Hatred and Envy. It is part of the Illya ulool uddin. A nice brief summary.Following intensive research, the purchase of this book has been a part of the process of building a library of Islamic literature, that relates particularly to seeking the path of excellence in spirituality, purification of the heart, ascetism, and an appreciation and understanding of the experiences of those who have followed this very path previously. The goal, God willing, in turn is to be inspired and motivated to seek success in a journey of personal development. Hence, this book is a piece of the puzzle of the big picture.

Poorly translated
I bought this with high hopes, to read what ghazzali had to say about treating anger. While the original text is good, this translation is shocking. I am surprised that some one as respected as seyyid hossein nasr could make such a slap dash effort at editing. There are grammatical and spelling mistakes throughout, but that is not the main problem. The problem is with the translation, it is so poorly done that at some points its nearly impossible to understand what imam ghazzali was trying to say and at others the wording just plain makes no sense at all. Don't buy this.

Good but pricey for almost a pamphlet
Very, very short book, rather too short for such a good life message and to be fair quite pricey therefore!

classical great
quite relevant for all times to deal with the triple ills of anger, hatred and envy; al-ghazalli words are as true today for our time now as they were when he wrote them down

Practical and relevant a thousand years later
Al Ghazzali was an academic respected both as a learned Muslim and a spiritually advanced Sufi in the practice of 'Irfan' or Gnosis. Something not readily seen in the modern world where the Islamic milieu appears to be polarising more and more. This book is 36 pages long and offers a spiritual perspective on the bases of anger and hatred with practical advice on how to first recognise these tendencies, their origins and the actions that inflame them, ending with advice on how to dominate these undesirable features. There are one or two observations which are quite surprising, as traits which foster anger and loathing , and yet on further analysis are of instructional benefit today, with their effects demonstrable in all sorts of spheres of modern life.Al Ghazzali is still relevant a 1000 years later with language that is moderate and accessible.Well recommended.
