Q: how wide does the gate expand

59 inches when expanded all the way.

Q: Does this gate have to sit on the floor or can it be installed a couple inches above the floor? I'm worried about it scratching my wood floor.

Ours was installed a couple inches above the floor but when you open it you'll have to lift it so it doesn't scratch when you swing it back

Q: how small does it retract?

It retracts the length of the top bar, 23”, plus add 1/2” for the hinge. It swings both ways so you can open it to almost flat against a wall or straight into a room.

Q: When fully expanded how wide are the gaps (diamond shapes)?

About 3.5" x 5.5" (width x height) , if you are measuring from the points of the diamond.
