A fine idiomatic performance
This is an excellent idiomatic performance. Angelo QUesta has the score well in hand and his chorus and orchestra know it well. The cast is headed by three greats. Taddei is a superlative baritone in fine form. Tagliavini known for his honeyed tone has it in character and on display. Pagliughi had a fine coloratura, and even recording late in career, is in good voice and absolutely in character. The mono sound is clean and full. (FYI: the negative review of this set is obviously a mistake and of another item, a DVD.)

very good recording
Taddei is an excellent Rigoletto and the rest of the cast is very good. Tagliavini had a sound and technique that was quite similar to that of Gigli and his Duke is quite lyrical. Pagliughi makes a very fine Gilda sounding very much in character as the demure daughter. None of these singers attempt any unwritten high notes which is probably for the best since none of them are known for that. The mono sound quality is good for it's age even if the voices are balanced much louder than the orchestra. But this is a Rigoletto that would appeal mostly to fans of Taddei, a great baritone who recorded far too rarely

but a great singer at the height of his powers
Stunning. Taddei doesn't quite have the voice of a Warren or MacNeil, but a great singer at the height of his powers.

Poor Quality
In addition to a disc that skipped and I can't seem to return. What I saw of it was very violent and confusing.

Pavarotti in which all the singers have beautiful voices but fail to get inside the characters and ...
I now have three versions of this opera. The Gobbi, Callas, Di Stefani recording which I would not be without; the Sherrill Milnes, Sutherland, Pavarotti in which all the singers have beautiful voices but fail to get inside the characters and now this one which I first heard in the mid fifties on a truly terrible LP recording but which had a performance that overcame its technical shortcomings, The present CD set has been very successfully remastered and is a joy to listen to. Of the three sopranos, Pagliughi comes closest to convincing us that Gilda is a young teenager and Tagliavini is an excellent Duke But it is, of course, Rigoletto who is at the core of this opera and Taddei is magnificent. Tenderer than Gobbi but equally convincing and it is a privilege to be able to compare two masters of their art plying their trade for our pleasure. Brilliant!!!
