Resharpens to razor sharp!
Had a handful of knives that were worthless and nearly discarded by friends. They left them with me, and after one learning process, the rest were sharpened super easy. Running the serrated hone isn't one I've needed, but the others are very predictable. Try to keep same amount of rod out for consistent angles, and it helps make less passes as you move to more fine stones. This changed my Buck knife from barely sharper than a butter knife to 'touch and snip' sharp. No regrets on this set when it revives the knife to new life, even before looking at steak knives (which I've received compliments on it's performance on).A note on the company - I received a busted box/holder for this set (not a deal breaker but bummed me out). Contacted company and no questions asked got a replacement box air mailed. I can't ask for anything more, and will be recommending to others for their service and ease of use.

Makes your knife very sharp!
Puts an edge on quick after you use it twice, and from then on, first time takes a while, totally worth the money!

Broken case.
Bought this as an upgrade to a basic set I've had for decades. Wanted the diamond stones for the superior edge. Problem is that the case was definitely dropped on the right side as all the plastic molding for holding the stones in place were broken on the right side. I've noticed no damage to the stones or guide. Works just like my old set. Edges are sharp and shiny. Would recommend but better packaging.

Very Effective
This tool whips an outstanding edge on a knife. I can now sharpen my Swiss Army Knife to the point that I can literally shave with it. I've never been able to do that before. Before you buy, check out the Lansky product, which is very similar and is less money.Don't scrimp. Get the diamond system. The plain stone systems gradually grind away so that you can't keep the same angle on your edge. The instructions are a little lacking in one respect. It's key that with the coarse and medium tool that you work the edge until you have a burr on the opposite side. With a little practice, you can just barely feel the burr on the away side of the edge. Then flip the tool over and work the other side. The blade holder has trouble gripping smaller blades, like pocket knives. But I shim with aluminum foil and get by just fine.

Great sharpening system
The Gatco diamond hone system is almost a perfect knife sharpener for someone like me that never used sharpening stones on knives. Our knives are now as shark as new.I bought a Chef's Choice Electric Knife Sharpener years ago but found that it did not work well. The Chef's Choice appeared to grind down the knives too much and would not sharpen all the way to the handle so it worked even worse on short paring knives.I wish that the guide rods on the Gatco were longer so they did not have to be pulled out of the handles before each stone is used. Also, the instructions are not made specifically for the diamond hone stones so it was confusing as whether to use oil on the diamond hones. I researched the issue and determined that the oil is only to be used only on the fine stone hone.

with a little practice
I've sharpened my knives on an Arkansas stone for years and got a good edge. This is so much easier, maintains the proper bevel and will put a razor edge on the knife. I need to leave an update: After practice with this system and the use of a leather strop and some green rouge my knife blades are so sharp it's literally scary! Also contrary to some other comments I've been able to sharpen everything from 1-1/2" pocket knife blades to 10" chef's knife blades. Just experiment with the clamp and you'll figure it out. I also highly recommend that you purchase the base and mount it to a 8" x 8" x 1" board. It will increase the ease of use and your accuracy greatly.

Not recommended.
I was not impressed with this. I think it would be fine for small pocket knifes, but I'm returning mine as it won't suit my needs for all sorts of knifes. The case is designed to hold the stones, but one of the pieces of plastic that holds one of the stones broke in transit. I.e., cheap case.Looks like it would be hard to get a 30 degree back bevel on a large knife.I wouldn't recommend this, but it is up to you of course.I also own the Sharpmaker, and like that for small and larger knives. The Edge Pro Apex might also interest you, but I haven't tried that.
