The doll represents a married women from a rural area in Helmand Province, South Afghanistan. She is an ethnic Pashto dressed for a special occasion: A party, wedding or national day. NOTE: A black veil and subdued colored clothes means the woman is married, a white veil and bright colored clothes means she is single. The Helmand Doll Project is a non-profit, humanitarian, charitable, self-help project that employs women to handcraft colorful, exotic and ethnic dolls.
