Q: Will this detect live wires underneath drywall?

It will not detect through the wall.It will detect through the insulation on the wire or plug it into the receptacle.

Q: what can go wrong to make stop workwing the sensor?

It could have been dropped and broke the wire to the sensor or in the tail piece.

Q: So i got one of these things and havent even opened the package , and if you lightly tap on it , the lite flickers . does that sound right ?

Yes - These items comes with batteries installed. It's very sensitive and when tapped it can briefly make the indicator light flicker. There is no issue with that.

Q: Will this work on an electric fence?

The Santronics 3115 AC Voltage Sensor determines the presence or absence of AC voltage in insulated wires, wall receptacles, fuses, junction boxes, switches, and any other voltage carrying electrical systems. It is not necessary to disconnect the system in question, because no contact is required for operation, and current flow is not necessary to locate voltage. Simply touch the plastic tip to a connection point or move it along an insulated wire. If AC voltage is present, the LED light in the probe tip will glow bright red. The illumination will stop at a break in the circuit or wire.
