The myriad uses for gaff tape can be found searching the web. This tape lacks adhesive and is made from silicone, and as others have mentioned, it adheres to itself. Either type of tape can be used to wrap the grip of various items: tools, weight-lifting bars, etc. Though this tape is marketed specifically for this purpose, if you don't want a rubber feel and would rather a cloth texture, then gaff tape would work fine. Also, to be more specific about how this differs from electrical tape, beyond the fact that electrical tape has adhesive while this does not, there are two other important differences. This is made of silicone, while electrical tape is typically made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC); and quality electrical tape will carry a UL certification — this part is important to ensure that it can handle the exposure to the elements, including voltage, without being a fire hazard.
