First, there is no tone mark put in the roman transcription. This will often result in memorizing words in wrong tones. This is very difficult to fix later on. Only way to know the correct tone is to decipher it from the relationships between the thai-alphabet tone mark and the consonant class. But this way is definitely not for the beginners. However, the contents are way too basic for any advanced learner.It says this is a phrase book but much of it is to memorize words. Memorizing words without the context is like rote memorization. It is difficult and inefficient for adults, who need the help of context to remember words..Roman transcription is the formal one. It is necessary, but a beginner will have a hard time pronouncing it in a way that would be understood by natives.

A handy, well organized book that is perfect for people who are traveling to Thailand for business or pleasure. It contains all the basic words and phrases you will need when you are in that fascinating country, where I know from experience that not many people speak English. The book also provides some interesting background about Thailand and its people. If you get the eBook version, you can use the hyperlinks to easily go to the section you need.

If you want an easier way to learn Thai, be sure to check out this book. It contains a lot of useful words and phrases to help you get started. I like that the Thai characters and romanization are presented to make pronunciation easier.

The book title claims to give "1,001 phrases". In fact, many of the supposed "phrases" are single words. So, for example, the numbers 1 to 20 apparently count as 20 of the supposed 1,001 "phrases". Likewise, the 12 months of the year are another 12 "phrases". I would estimate that over half the supposed "phrases" are just single words. I'd send it back and ask for a refund if I could be bothered.
