It was interesting getting the "official " history of the NATIONAL THEATRE along with Michael Blakemore's STAGE BLOOD. I suggest reading both to get a fuller picture of what happened on creating this important theatre.

Mandatory Reading for all Theatre Lovers
Such a thorough history marvellous to hear about the many productions that have been taken to all parts of the world including little 'ol New Zealand. My Only problem is getting enough time to finish the whole book but I will get there. This is a must for all those interested in Theatre, acting and directing.

900 pages but a real page turner!
I could not believe how readable this history of The National Theatre was. Beautifully written and full of back room intrigue, great moments in theatre history, and gossip. Sad to have finished it.

The National Theatre history brought to life..
An exhaustive but not exhausting read. Rosenthal takes a bit of time to get going but the National Theatre was promised since the 1900s before becoming a reality in the early 60s. It brought back so many wonderful memories of productions and wonderful performances seen. It also was fascinating to eead about the howlers seen too. If you love theatre, this is essential.

Fascinating story
An excellent book. Rosenthal turns a huge amount of information into a coherent and lively story, with lots of telling anecdotes. You don't expect the history of an institution to be a page-turner, but this one is. I'm not in the profession, or even a frequent NT-goer, but this book kept me reading well past bedtime. He writes so well that he even makes the bits about finances and fund-raising interesting.

Fabulous for luvvies and history buffs alike
Enormous book to chronicle the greatest theatre of all time - if you love theatre, the arts and even the modern history of London this book is a must read. With the accompanying televisual special, it is the best piece of theatrical history ever accomplished.
