The Vortex Moves LOTS of Air!
The media could not be loaded. I live in my travel trailer five months of the year. Every season, I have to replace the 12-volt motor in the roof vent in the bathroom. This year I decided to invest in the Vortex I after reading some reviews and watching an installation video online. The product arrived in perfect condition and with all required parts included in the box. I decided to remove the screen (an easy twist counterclockwise) and the fan blades to make it easier to see up inside the vent during installation. Wiring was simple (white to white and black to black). What wasn’t immediately obvious (there were no instructions) was how the gear for the handle that raises the vent lid was going to work with the location of the knob on the Vortex. (The gear was about 4” in from the edge of the vent, while the location of the knob was about 2” in from the edge of the Vortex. In the rectangular white box (the gear box) in the photo, I’ve circled the opening into which the gear on the vent lid fits. It required a firm push to seat it, but the alignment was fine.Once I had the Vortex in place, it was a simple matter to fasten it up with the two screws that were provided. There were no problems with the alignment of the pockets for the screws and the openings in the cross piece in the vent. (I closed the shower drain and covered the register before starting. I also used a magnetic bit on my screwdriver to make it less likely I’d drop a screw.) I tested the switch before re-installing the fan blades and screen. (The motor has a D-shaft, so be sure to align the fan blades with the shaft.) The last step was to put the bezel back up.Although I would not describe it as quiet, the Vortex moves LOTS of air and should do a much better job of reducing odor and humidity than the old fan.

When it says high velocity, it means it!
First, my wife and I started full time RVing last year. This means we are living in our RV 100% of the time. (No, we're not retired! :))Second, my nick name on Amazon is based on my fishing hobby and has nothing to do with the product!Unit does what it says it should do. Our OEM fan was DOA when we bought our RV last year and since we were going to buy one of these anyway we didn't even report it under warranty. This unit was surprisingly easy to install. The hard part was putting the lower plastic retainer back on to the ceiling since there wasn't much wood to work with around the edges. As for performance: This thing has extreme pulling power and it lets you know it by making a tremendous amount of noise! The noise is bad enough that you can't have a conversation with someone 3ft away without yelling. However, since we are in Texas, we need the extreme pulling power of a cooling fan at times and this unit does that very well.Warning: This unit has the power to reverse the suction on your toilet so be sure to have a window open when you run the fan or you'll be cleaning up the mess it makes when you flush. Took us a minute or two (or maybe a day or two) to figure this out being that we are new to full time RVing. One slight modification we had to make: The fan has a screen on the inside to protect your fingers from being shredded by the fan blades. This screen bows up in the middle causing it to touch the center of the fan. It probably wouldn't have had any major effect but it added to the noise (if that were possible!). So I hung a weight from my fishing tackle box using some fishing line from the center of the fan screen. This pulled the screen down and it no longer screams louder than the fan. This trick could be accomplished by hanging your favorite knickknack from the center of the screen. It would need to weight about 2 ounces. It might be tempting to remove the screen completely but then this would allow the bees and hornets to take up residence in your RV and trust me when I say that RV's with their tight spaces and crazed stinging winged things do not go well together.Another additional note is that the screen mentioned above becomes filled with dust over time and must be cleaned. The screen is removable and you can clean it with a small bristled hand brush which works great for this.Overall, I'd buy this unit again. The only thing we would have liked better would be the option to reverse the fan. The problem was the comparable unit that had reverse had bad reviews. So for what this unit does, it does it very well.

Good vent fan!!
I bought this fan to replace the failing cheapie that was installed in my RV by the manufacturer. Installation, while not the snap others make it out to be, was easy enough. It took me about 90 minutes. A third hand would have been helpful. Also a replacement screw was not provided to anchor the vent lid lift mechanism to the crank handle gearbox. The existing screw is now too long. And I think I prefer the old crank handle to the twist knob provided with this fan. I did have to modify the plastic surround that seals the fan to the ceiling as the new installment sits about 1.5 inches lower that the original.Once installed it runs great. And it does move some air! A lot of air! I can feel the air moving around my feet in the shower with the curtain closed! As far as the noise goes, this fan does have a hum during spin up and a noticeable roar at speed. Part from the air moving through the fan and part from the motor which has a low pitch buzz. I'll take the minor buzz over the high pitch whine of the fan it replaced any day. But this fan is not silent.Something not mentioned in other reviews is that the wire screen comes out, making the fan itself and the screen easy to clean. A 10 degree twist and the screen housing drops right out.My biggest complaint is the serious reduction in light coming through the vent. With the old (inefficient)fan, you could read in the bathroom without the light. Now, with this fan, Even on a sunny day, there is not enough light to read by without turning the overhead light on.But overall, I am pleased and would recommend this fan to anyone that is needing a replacement bathroom vent fan.
