Wonderful, clean
Wonderful, clean, no nonsense edition of the Inventions/Sinfonias. While other editions take absurd liberties and add dynamics and articulations, this is an Urtext (as close to the original as possible) edition, like nearly everything Henle does. An urtext edition is all the more important with Bach's music, which was published without any dynamic or tempo markings. While it's perfectly fine to suggest tempo and dynamic markings in Bach's music, most editions do not make it clear that their additions are not original, and thus create the false impression that Bach intended for his music to be played in a certain way. The fact is, we just don't know for sure, and the sheet music should reflect that uncertainty.Another strength of this edition is its lengthy and clear explanations of ornamentations. There are tons of different ornamentations found in the sheet music and this edition makes it crystal clear what each one means.

Best Ever!
Urtext does it again! Bach's Inventions and Simphonias never looked so good. Nice, lay-flat binding that always stays open when I play, and the print is dark and clear. Nice clean pages, with very few markings - FINALLY! The only markings are a feww fingering suggestions that are accurate, logical, and helpful.Definitely worth your money!

Bought another copy for another student. These (true) Urtext editions have always been the only choice for me.
I no longer play these in performance--JS intended them as teaching pieces, as lovely as they are (when played in true Baroque style). But they're mandatory literature for my serious students, and, really, what can you say about Urtext editions (Henle and Wiener)? They're really the only way to go. You know, though--for students who aren't headed to conservatory, I like, for the price, the Alfred Masterworks publications, too.

Treasures every student should learn and enjoy as they step towards musical mastery
Like many piano students, I studied the Bach two and three part inventions since I was a young student. And also like many students, I found them challenging, difficult, and, finally, quite rewarding. Yes, I shed more than few tears of frustration along the way. But I always believed it would be worth the effort and I was right. I trusted my teachers and put in the mental effort to understand them as best as I could. When I was studying music theory as an upper level undergraduate at the University of Michigan School of Music, I was incredibly fortunate to take a course on counterpoint from the great Ellwood Derr (may he rest in eternal light and peace) that focused entirely on the two part inventions. He showed us how Bach intended them as part of his course on composition. But the order of study should not be the printed order. Rather the order of the introduction of compositional difficulties. And Bach wrote them in sets of three that followed the key pattern. That is, C major-d minor-e minor, then F Major-G Major- a minor, then b minor- Bb Major - A Major, then g minor - f minor - E Major, and finally Eb Major - D Major- c minor. It was a marvelous experience in working out the reasons for the order and what Bach was teaching in each piece. You can read the paper Derr later published on this by downloading "The Two-Part Inventions: Bach's Composers' Vademecum" from J-Stor. It is a marvelous read.I must admit that I have tried teaching the inventions to most of my students over the years and have gotten many to learn a few of them, but few seem to have the fire to really want to tackle these works in a way that will reveal their treasures to them. Frankly, this has been a source of sadness to me, but I keep hoping someone will one day see and hear and understand. You see, the contrapuntal hearing you need for Bach is the same contrapuntal hearing you need to hear deeply in the classical and Romantic masters, even though their surfaces are a different. To say you like the tunes of later periods better is to miss the point of the music utterly. This is the edition I used in class and the one I recommend to each of my students and the one I recommend to you. Wonderful and easy to read, durable, and with excellent scholarship. Please get these works and STUDY them. You will be rewarded. I promise.Reviewed by Craig Matteson, Saline, MI

It is nice to have the complete collection of inventions and sinfonias ...
It is nice to have the complete collection of inventions and sinfonias composed by J.S. Bach. The notation is clearly printed and easy to read (good font selection and appropriate size of notation too).
