The Haunter of the Dark: Collected Short Stories Volume Three

"The Haunter Of The Dark" is a very good representation of Lovecraft's literary career. It contains samples of the different strands of his fiction and also his main poetic work the sonnet cycle 'Fungi From Yuggoth' and his major critical opus 'Supernatural Horror In Literature'.The truth is that not all of Lovecraft's writing is of equal merit. I find all of the Randolph Carter stories fairly dispensable. Also apart from the memorable 'The Cats Of Ulthar' I find his Dunsany influenced fantasy writing unexceptional. But also included is the excellent 'Pickman's Model', the science fiction horror of 'The Colour Out Of Space' and the strong Cthulhu Mythos stories 'The Haunter Of The Dark', 'The Thing On The Doorstep' and the lengthy science fiction orientated 'The Shadow Out Of Time'.The Poetry of 'Fungi From Yuggoth' is more Romantic and Victorian in style than the contemporary modernism of Pound and Eliot. It does include such symbolic poems as 'Nyarlathotep' and 'Azathoth' probably influenced by Poe and possibly even Yeats.The essay 'Supernatural Horror In Literature' is very comprehensive and full of insights. However he does pass over the Irish author Joseph Sheridan LeFanu very quickly - I wonder if he'd read "In A Glass Darkly"?This book is attractively bound and inexpensive and while not all of his best fiction is included a lot is. Highly recommended.

Hard going lots of old English language

Almost 600 pages of some of the best Lovecraft stories (plus the very interesting essay on "The Supernatural in Horror Literature") - for THREE euro. Yes, a total no-brainer! 21 stories, the abovementioned essay, plus the "Fungi from Yoggoth" poetry all in this volume. If you want to read e.g. "The Colour out of Space" (no doubt popular at the moment due to the recent film version) then why bother looking at other editions when this is so cheap?! The standard format (size, font) of other Wordsworth books in this series of "Tales of Mystery and the Supernatural", all exceedingly good value!
