Awesome followup to Freedom of the Hills
This book is a fantastic followup to The Freedom of the Hills. It introduces alpine techniques in a way that makes sense to the inexperienced. Most importantly, though, it addresses the issue of risk in a perfect fashion. Contrary to what you might expect, it does not tell you to take more risk (as is generally the case with alpine-style climbing). Rather, it invites you to set your own acceptable risk and make decisions based on that. Highly recommended!

Calling all climbers and ski mountaineers!
Complete, incredibly practical guide to alpine technique and decision-making. The authors' many years of experience are expertly distilled and communicated in words and pictures - this is a jump-start for aspiring and advancing mountaineers and a useful compendium for experts who want to share their craft. Bravo Kathy and Mark!

Climb harder than Freedom of the Hills...
...but not to the extreme. This book is the second chapter in an aspiring alpinists handbook. I found myself over the years amassing a pile of pooks on running, fittness*, nutrition*, supplements*, advanced rock climbing, ice climbing, crevasse rescue, orienteering*, navigation*, avalanche evaluation, etc. This book would have saved me a few bucks by putting alot of this in one place.* = These are covered well in this book.If you know Freedom of the Hills like the back ouf your hand, have Extreme Alpinism and a good book on slightly more advanced rock skills, don't bother. If not, get it.Even with this book, you need a resource of some sort in avy eval and advanced rock/rope skills.

very nice
Best of the Mountaineers Outdoors Series that I have read so far. Nice follow up to Freedom of the Hills. Although general information with gaps as it is geared to advanced "we assume that you already know.."

Great Resource!
A definitive resource for all things related to climbing. Interesting and engaging on subjects beyond your immediate area of interest.

A great reference for all technical mountaineers
Nothing beats an actual technical mountaineering course, but for those of us who have been to one, this book serves as a perfect reference.
