Perfect tool for this beginner.
I have been trying to learn PSG for longer than I care to admit. I have watched youtube videos, bought Jeff Newman's stuff, and a number of other books and videos from Amazon. This book has helped me the most by far. There's a lot of great stuff out there, but it was always a bit too advanced for me just starting out. The mechanics of push this pedal, slide up a whole step, release, drop back a step, push this pedal, etc, is all fine for learning the licks, but this pulls it back a notch and gives me more tools to use than just some canned mechanics, if that makes sense.I'd recommend that someone who wishes to purchase this at least have some musical knowledge first, and a grasp of the Nashville Number System. That's going to probably necessary with not only this book, but with playing the instrument in general.

First Lessons Pedal Steel by Jay Leach
If you want a great kick start in to playing pedal Steel guitar, then this is the book to get.Jay Leach explains it in a way that anyone can understand. With the DVD it is like he is just talking to you, and keeps it from going to deep.He has put in a bit of humor so as not to get too tense.I was using other more expensive learning material and was struggling, so I heard about this book and for a good price, I bought it.With in a short time of watching the DVD and also using the CD with the really good back tracks, I was playing. You have choices on the CD of hearing Jay play it and then you can play along with him or just with the back track.I have a long way to go but I am definitely ahead of where I was, I now can play the songs in the book.Playing music is what it is about, and this book makes it all come together.Jay Leach, thank you for being an outstanding player and instructor.

Being a guitarist of forty years experience I took the the plunge and bought a Pedal Steel. I found all the instruction sources very good but they all seemed to focus on the traditional teaching methods of scales, music theory, picking exercises and repetition of exercises, the kind of stuff I got when I was learning guitar all those years ago. Important as all these things are, weeks and weeks of it are just plain boring, it was boring forty years ago and it is today. This book gets you playing and making music on the instrument as you progress even from the start. The beauty of it is that you can knock out a tune and actually use that tune to improve using the traditional methods alongside.
