Typical high quality, easy to use Garmin
You just cannot go wrong with this Garmin. It took a little while to get here but was worth the wait. Nice big screen, easy to use right out of the box and can be handheld and stored in the glovebox when not in use. It does not lose signal, since it's on Sat. So if a phone hits a dead zone, this works anywhere. It's already gotten us out when we were completely lost and the phone had no signal. It takes 1 min to pull out of the glove box and hit the home button. It's easy to follow, easy to set and easy to turn off when you need peace and quiet. Perfect for when we need it, gone when we don't. It's a keeper!

Bright and readable screen.
This is an upgrade from a smaller and older Garmin that I moved to an antique car. I love it. When it came the brightness was turned down so low you could barely see it turned on, and the battery was almost dead. Had to put it in the car for a couple of hours to charge up or it wouldn't program. I transferred my old saved favorites from my older Garmin without a hitch. The software was easy to follow and worked like a champ. I like the new voice too. I trust Garmin and I like the free map upgrades. Be sure and register with Garmin when you buy...that gets you in the system for map and software upgrades. that you get via their on line acessable software...no phone calling, just load and go!.

Not Jarvis, a little quirky, but gets me where I'm going.
I bought this after having a bad experience with Magellan (I previously owned a Magellan Maestro, and replaced it with a newer Magellean, but that one had horrible volume and Magellan support was useless). I prefer a GPS unit rather than my phone, because I like the visuals, and the phone GPS apps I've tried weren't cutting it for me. This is the first Garmin product I've owned.I've used it several times now, and so far it's been what I've hoped for, more or less. Volume is fine, map is fine. I like the road view when there's a highway split or exit, so I can see what's coming up. I appreciate the real life directions, and the fact that it tells me which lane I need to be in before I'm actually upon it. Most of all, I love the fact that it tells me what the speed limit is, since frequently signs are too far apart in my state, and it's anyone's guess what the speed limit might be...or when it might unexpectedly drop from 55 to 35. WONDERFUL feature.Quirks:--Sometimes it gives odd instructions, like "Be in the fourth lane from the left" rather than "Be in the right lane."--Doesn't always logically reroute if you drive a different way than it wants you to go. For instance, I bypassed the single highway entrance because I wanted to continue on the major road I was already on, but rather than tell me to continue straight (which still would have led to the next step in the route), it just kept telling me to make a U turn...this went on for ages until I finally went in and told it to detour to avoid the highway.--Has a feature where you can select your route by changing the points on the map, but when I tried to use it while having the U turn issue above, it wouldn't work. (I have used it before, so I know it works when using Trip Planning. Not sure why it wouldn't work for straight navigation, but I'll look it up when I get a chance.)Silly Disappointment:--I really wanted a male British voice for it, but tech support only directed me to the setting for British spelling--there's no British voice, apparently. Now I can't name it Jarvis.Overall, I'm pretty happy with it, even if it's not Jarvis.

Good to have
I bought a new car without the GPS because I was planning to use my phone. The phone is fine when I leave my house but when I want to go home half the time there is no WIFI. Also the car has the ability to show the phone map on the backup screen but that is very finicky. I got this GPS. It is a nice size and works well. I especially like that it tells you turn at the next light or next stop sign, not just turn in 1000 feet. I don't have to worry about turning the bluetooth off in order to hear the direction. I also like that I can put in the GPS coordinates. We hike and it is easier to find trailheads when you can put in the coordinates.

Love this GPS
I got the Garmin Drive 51 USA LM.After some research I learned the LM stands for lifetime maps. I thought something was wrong with it when I first plugged it into the computer with the included usb cable because I couldn’t get anything to really come up like it should. I then realized it was because the battery was completely drained. I left it for several minutes,( it was still charging because computer was still on) then it all started working like it should. I did an update and then took it off the computer and continued to charge with the same usb cord plugged into an outlet. I then set up ( inside the house ) my settings, which included avoiding tolls and highways ( also there was an exclusion for ferries). I chose to save those settings because I hate interstates. I was then able to find my trip location and save it ( there is a mini sd card slot if you need more room), all from inside the house. I also went ahead and saved my home address. I used the included cigarette plug charger to hook it up inside the car. I took the 3 hour trip. The GPS never failed me. It gave me great directions. This was very easy and correct. It wasn’t overly priced. If you want a good general GPS this one will be great. Very satisfied.

Good GPS. Horrible mounting plasticware.
I've had good experiences with a few previous Garmin GPS units. This one, too, has nice features and software. What drove me nuts today was trying to mount it. The plastic pieces are flimsy and insecure. The round disc that's supposed to hold the unit wouldn't stay in the back of the device. I tried to stabilize things with some polyurethane glue but everything came apart in my hands. As I said, this isn't my first GPS but the first where the plasticware (definitely not "hardware") seems to be from a Dollar Store clearance bin.Because I tried to glue it together, I can't return it. So I have to invent and fabricate some kind of bracket to hold the unit. Not easy because its rear surface is curved in 4 directions. If Garmin would make it shaped more like a cellphone, it wouldn't be so hard to attach. So far, I'm aggravated by this device.

Garmin GPS.
