This is the one!
Got it in the mail today just in time for my weekly mowing. I had bought Brand new and dumped a Greenworks duel string trimmer two weeks ago that jammed about 6 times in 30 minutes. I unpackaged this B&D today charged the battery while I mowed. Charges a little slow it was only 1/3 full after an hour or so. I put it in the trimmer with only 1/3 battery life and proceeded to trim through my half acre lawn edges without running out of battery and with zero jamming. It was a tremendous experience. I love this thing! Imagine what it can do on a full charge. Will it work for a farmer who’s mowing down alfalfa? Probably not but for the homeowner who just needs to make his yard look nice this is the one! I agree with some other reviews that is could be a little taller (6-12”), and the battery takes a while to charge but that’s a small price to pay for such a durable well designed trimmer that gets the job done so quickly and without any hassle. Handle is super grippy, auto feed is great, Lightweight, 40v is plenty of power, no cords to deal with, etc. Five stars!

excellent
Had exact same model since 2014 - 12 years! The gears in the working end finally wore out and just slip. Pretty good for an hour every weekend for 6 months of the year! And now i have an extra battery (about $35 by itself I think).

Nice edger/trimmer for the money, but...
While the edger/trimmer works well does the job, the spool of line does NOT last very long, I do NOT have a large yard and I can't do the entire yard with one spool. As far as the battery goes, it has plenty of juice for the entire yard 2-3 times. It is easy to change the spool and it's lightweight. The only negative about this product is the line gets used up very quickly.

Really like it
Has the power to cut almost everything I need to cut, except things like saplings or weeds that have gotten really hard. Had weeds/grass that was at least a foot or more tall and it went right through it. It was quite thick! I really like that I can make it shorter. I'm only 5'5" and most weed eater shafts are too long. The guard is better than my corded electric weed eater too, not as much debris is thrown at me in comparison. That's important, since it's often poison ivy that is being cut. It lasts about as long as I do. I can't do my entire yard - it's fairly large and a lawnmower gets destroyed by the rocks so that's out. I do maybe 1/3 to a half of the yard, then wait till another day to do more. That's a good thing! With my corded one I usually do too much at a time, and pay for it with soreness. I imagine I could get another battery if I get more used to it and want to go longer. I especially like the freedom of going wherever I want. With the corded one I could only go as far as the cord reached. I also like the automatic feed, without having to bump it, and being able to buy pre-wound spools. The only bad thing is I wanted to get a reciprocating saw and use the same battery. Alas, the saws only use the 20V batteries, so I'll have to get a whole other set up for that. Added later: Well, now that I'm getting used to it, I'm thinking I will need another battery to go as long as I want to, especially since I put a shoulder strap on it that helps to distribute the weight onto my lower body. The great thing about this one compared to my old corded one is that this one can be made shorter, which really helps when you are not tall to make the head at a better angle. It's also much lighter! Didn't realize it until I picked up the old one to get the strap off it. All said and done, I would buy this again. Worth it.

Light and battery seems to last fine. Plenty of power
First battery powered trimmer ever and this battery lasted longer than I thought it would based on reviews. It was nice to not have to drag out extension cords. Seems to pack a lot of power and did a good job. I purchased a Greenworks edger so I haven’t and probably won’t use this to edge. Went with B&D because I’ve always used their products and only got this because my electric one died after 11+ years. Can’t speak to longevity yet because just got it and used it this morning. Purchased a backup battery but if I don’t have more to do than I did this morning I probably won’t use it or I’ll rotate them to keep both fresh.

I though Black+Decker was quality.
The main issue is the line advance. It is not regulated. It goes through a spool in about 20 minutes. The battery life is also on the poor side. It only lasts about 20 minutes from a full charge. There is only one string trimmer, not 2. It doesn't control well (not easy to cut a straight line). It is difficult to return. I have tried to return it 5 times, but I still can't get a shipping label.

Great Product
This is my third Black & Decker trimmer. Not by poor product, because I am very rough on them at times. I love this trimmer and have gotten many of my friends hooked on it. It is great for the price, easy to change string and light weight. The only disappointment with this new one is it doesn't have variable speed option like my previous ones.

Great when it works. It's a single-season product with a great warranty, though.
I love this thing when it works. Battery is good. Powerful enough to get a reasonable job done. Lightweight, quiet, and easy to re-spool. And it's got a great warranty that I have leaned on now for the third or fourth time in the three years since I bought it. I run this seasonally, weekly through one (sometimes two) battery cycles. So, once, sometimes twice, a week through Spring and Summer. And every year they get cooked. Fried. Melted gizzards and such. Smoking and clattering and rattling about. Out of nowhere they just burn out. Thankfully Black and Decker has been great with warrantying this but after three years I think that requiring more than warranty claim simply speaks to the quality of this particular product. I have no issues with the other Black and Decker products in my life but this one has been an irritant, for sure. If you have 10 or 15 minutes of trimming requirements a week I think this item will be great for you and last you many wonderful, satisfying years. But if you need to run it for the duration of a battery cycle (15 minutes and more) a week for six months a year, just be aware that you'll reach for it one day and it will throw a tantrum.

Great!
Works great, battery lasted for big back yard and small front yard. Not too heavy, and very easy to start!

Great product. Works really well.
Love this weed eater! The battery was still at 2/3 bars after edging my medium sized lawn. A lot more powerful than I expected. Great product!

Black & Decker 40 volt grass trimmer
It's a five star trimmer but I had to give it a four star because it came with a 1.5 amp hour battery I had to buy a battery 3.5 amp hours to do the job all around the yard the 1.5 amp power battery would only do the front yard then I had to charge it to do half the back of my yard and then charge it again to do the other half it would have been nice if they gave me a larger battery and charge me a couple dollars extra for the trimmer I like the way that it turns to cut along the driveway and the way it turns to cut flat I really like the trimmer because it's light and easy to operate

Light weight. Quiet
Charge lasts a long time. Takes a while to recharge battery. Does a great job and is quiet and efficient. Would recommend this product

The truth about this trimmer
Great trimmer except for one flaw. The line retention clip breaks and Black and Decker makes you go through hoops with emails for a receipt. I have never gotten a receipt from Amazon for any purchase I have ever had, just a purchase date when you look it up. I don’t have the time to look up any other way to get a receipt. Black and Decker needs to get their head out of their ass and realize this. Long story short…… I just purchased a bunch of replacements from Amazon (not very expensive) as I know it will break again….. I hope Black and Decker reads these reviews to possibly fix this problem with a great trimmer
