Avoid - taste fake; all round over-priced-rip off
I really wanted to like this. I was happily compiling Easter treats for grandchildren, looking for a mix of European festive items I knew from my childhood, and healthier treats. I winced at the idea of paying over $10 for these … but I thought, OK, it's 9 eggs, and they're real marzipan, nice bright colors, and it comes in a pretty "festive basket" I can use for one of the girls… I'll just do it.And now for the reality:When I saw what they actually look like - tiny miserable looking things that are so poorly shaped they barely resemble eggs, and sitting not in a pretty "festive basket" but in a cheap flimsy little plastic box - a pale green, mini-size version of a supermarket cherry tomato pack with some plastic wrap over it …I got nervous: what if they taste as sub-par as they look?!So then I checked the ingredients (and note that those aren't listed by the seller): 1st & 4th items are sugar and corn syrup (!); 3rd item is apricot kernels (!!) .., and sure enough "artificial almond flavoring". The apricot kernels and fake flavoring are a dead give-away. They're used when manufacturers want to skimp on using real almonds, or buy cheap, poor quality almonds with an off taste. And sad to say, that's exactly how these taste: the mix of sickly sweetness & the bitter flavor of apricot kernels plus a strong overlay of artificial almond flavoring completely over-powers any real almond taste you expect from marzipan. I could barely swallow the bit I broke off one to taste. If I didn't know what real marzipan tastes like, and this was all I had to go by, I'd make sure I never went within a mile of it in future. I can't possibly give these to my grandchildren. Real marzipan is a wonderful confection. It's so disappointing. So, a sad lesson learned: if there are no product ingredients listed, and there's no real description, *or image* of the actual container the items come in to show what the "festive basket" looks like and is made of …. well, then you know there's probably a good reason for that: if you knew what the product really was, you wouldn't dream of shelling out over $10 for it! Even at the actual bar-code sticker price on the plastic wrap around on the item - $4.50 - they'd be a stretch. So imagine how I feel having paid $5.50, not the actual sticker price of $4.50 PLUS another $4.99 shipping….and now find myself trying to find an alternative.
