How much clearance do you need to get to the back for maintenance? Can you put this against a wall?

ALthough you can put it up against the wall I have it in a corner which allows me access to check the chambers in the back. Using a flashlight I can look in and see what is going on for maintenance. The back 2nd and 3rd chambers have glass for checking.

What heater should i use on this tank ?

Whichever heater you get, it will fail. In a week? In a month? In a year? Doesn't matter - it'll fail. It'll either fail off, and freeze your fish, or fail on, and boil your fish. But before you hold your face in your fish tank in despair - there is a solution! Get two smaller heaters. Instead of 100W, get 2x 50W. If one fails off, the other works harder to stop the temperature dropping too far. If either fails on, it'll just make your water a bit balmier than usual. Better still, get 3x30W heaters ! :)

Does it have a protein skimmer? Is there a good alternative to a protein skimmer?

No it doesn't come with a protein skimmer. Since nano tanks have become very popular over the last few years there are lots of options for these tanks as far as skimmers, upgraded pumps, etc. Tunze makes a very good small skimmer for these style tanks. I don't remember the model number of the one I had on my last biocube. As far as an alternative to a skimmer. Lots of water changes. I don't really think there is an alternative.
