Essential information in our times
This is an absolutely wonderful book...a GEM! Besides learning the fard (required knowledge) every muslim must know, this is also essential knowledge that is especially important in our times when life in general has become about being entertained at every second instead of living our purpose which is to serve the Creator. Seeking knowledge and thus perfecting the human character is extremely important. The information contained in this book is something that is extremely important and if absorbed and implemented with sincerity can Insha'Allah lead to having a cleaner heart when we stand before Allah on the day of judgement. The author explains a book written by Shaykh Muhammad Mawlud (May Allah have Mercy on him) which describes each disease of the heart and gives their respective cures. There are also beneficial prayers and information in the appendix. I highly recommend this book. May Allah bless Hamza Yusuf for writing this book!.

This book kicked off a quest to improve my spirituality
This book kicked off a quest to improve my spirituality. Would highly recommend if you need a jump start to soften your heart. One caveat, the language can be really flowery and intense which causes you to double-take and ask yourself what he meant and why. That can be a turn off for many people but I understand that the language is a device to talk about matters of the heart. Also an aside: problem-prescription style of the book is very useful. You don't have to read the book in one sitting because it works as a reference manual (I'd still recommend a full read because it gives you a bigger picture). Also, both the physical version and the Kindle version are great in their adaptations.

A housekeeping job for the heart!
I bought this book, hoping to read up on iniquity, which showed up in the table of contents in my Kindle version. However, once I began reading that section, I found that the author had wandered off to other topics and never really explained Fisq or iniquity, which is mentioned over and over in the Qur'an.The book is highly recommended to those so-called Muslims, who can be classified as narcissists, sociopaths, histrionics and other character disordered individuals. Non-Muslims may also benefit from this book, as cleansing of all sorts is in vogue today, be it a body detox or a spiritual one.For the average Muslim person, this book is a solid guide for living in the state of Islam.

Excellent book!
As a Muslim, I say this a must read for every human being. Non-Muslims will like this book as well! Maybe just some terms will be unfamiliar, and some names cited will seem foreign but the core messages apply to all of humanity.Don't think that you won't find things of value in this book; be humble (hehe) and ready to see the numerous flaws in you heart. This book is not limited to the 'big ones' only-- it covers many of the more minor diseases of the heart.

Brilliant, wonderful, highly recommended
This is an absolutely amazing book. It goes through specific diseases of the heart, like envy and greed, etc. It defines each disease of the heart and then gives recommendations on how to treat these problems. This book, though grounded in Islamic theological sources, is relevant to anyone, Muslim or non-Muslim. All of the problems of one's heart are common to any human being. And these problems cause personal grief, despair and suffering in any person effected by them. Highly, highly recommended. I honestly haven't done this wonderful, brilliant book any justice with this brief review.

Spritual wellbeing is ignored because its sickness is not immediately painful
One of the best books that I have read. Very practical and applicable. It is not a normal book to be read and put away. It is a book to be read a few pages at a time, and then its lessons practiced and only when one is satisfied with the results on one's heart, must one proceed to the next section. May Allah reward the Shaikh for the translation and for all the good that this book has the potential to spread and enable us to practice its lessons so that we can enrich our own and other's lives.

A Clear Manual for Spiritual Purification
Shaykh Hamza Yusuf presents the deep spiritual tradition of Islam in a manual that is accessible to the modern individual. Understanding these diseases along with their cures is the way to fully live Islam, giving life to practice and belief.I highly recommend this book for those interested in learning about Islam's spiritual tradition; and for those willing to set out on the path of purification, seeking nearness to the Divine.

Excellent!
Great book! I think that Hamza Yusuf has brought forth the real issue of what is missing in our society today. I think that a lot of what happens in a persons heart transcends into actions and if one is not mindful of their actions it could be harmful.

Lovey book to read, put down and read again.
This is a remarkable book very well written/translated. Like all Sufi text i find it to be one that can be picked up at any part of the book and find wisdom. The book is full of wise sayings and traditions of Prophets and discusses the many diseases of the heart, the reasons for them and how they can be cured. Its remarkable to read a book like this the difference between what is commonly viewed of Islam in the media and what can be found in these pages is almost black and white. Reading a book like this I only wish more would read this book and reflect upon it."A man saw the Prophet kiss a baby and asked him, "Do you kiss your children?" The Prophet said "Indeed I do." Then man then said, "I have ten children, I never kissed any of them," which was considered an aspect of the pride of being a tough Arab. To that the Prophet replied, "There is nothing in my religion for a man whose heart is void of mercy" (Except from the book)
