## Description

When Social Welfare threatens to put Ricky into care, the overweight Maori boy and cantankerous Uncle Hec flee into the remote and rugged Ureweras. The impassable bush serves up perilous adventures, forcing the pair of misfits to use all their skills to survive hunger, wild pigs, and the vagaries of the weather. Worse still are the authorities, determined to bring Ricky and Uncle Hec to justice. But despite the difficulties of life on the run, a bond of trust and love blossoms between the world-weary man and his withdrawn sidekick.

Review: Remarkable - What a great story. I saw the film first and went looking for the book. Both are terrific. The characters are well-drawn and the movie is true to the book’s depiction. I really enjoyed both—I couldn’t put the book down once I started it.
Review: Fun, easy read - I bought this book after seeing the movie Hunt for the Wilderpeople. The book is fairly different from the movie, which isn't a bad thing. The movie was comedic and fast-paced, whereas the novel had a more serious, survivalist tone. The endings were slightly different, as well, which I think is a good thing because one won't spoil the other. The book ending was definitely more surprising and sad. Crump's writing style is casual and straight forward, kind of like a more modest Hemingway. Crump did a great job writing from the perspective of a 14-year-old. It never felt forced. The story overall felt very realistic; I got the impression that Crump had actually experienced most of the events he described. I think this book will appeal to a wide variety of people. It would appeal equally to 12 year old or an 80 year old. It's a stereotypical "boy book," but girls will enjoy it, too. My only complaint is that the book could be repetitive at times. 90% of the story is about food - hunting for food, foraging for food, stashing food, stealing food from cabins, etc.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Just as good as the movie
*by Z***T on February 16, 2019*

I got this book because I loved the movie adaptation, Hunt for the Wilderpeople. I enjoyed the book just as much, and I could hear the characters speaking as I read it. Be warned, the ending is a bit sad.
